On the hills above Azérables

This short route takes you past the splendid buildings hidden away in the village of Azérables, before taking you up to higher ground to admire them once more, this time in their natural setting.

Description of the walk

Car park: Place de la Mairie.

(S/E) Head towards the church via Rue des Érables. Turn left into Rue du Père Denis, then follow the main road to the right as it climbs. Pass the cul-de-sac by the care home.

(1) Turn right onto a small street and continue along a path that leads out of the village.

(2) Join a road and follow it to the left for a few metres before taking the path on the right. At the top of the hill, there is a road which you should follow to the left to leave the hamlet of Les Penots; after a few hundred metres, you will reach a junction.

(3) Then head up the access road on the right towards the village of La Fayolle, then turn right again to reach the bottom of a path that emerges on the left.

(4) Follow the track uphill. Further on, at the crossroads, take the track veering sharply to the right, ignoring first a track on the left and then, immediately afterwards, a second track on the right.

(5) Turn sharply right to head down towards a farm and the hamlet of Mondoland. Continue along the Route du Stade and join the D70 to enter Azérables.

(6) Follow it to the right, then turn right into Rue Grande to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Yellow signposting.
The walk starts at the town hall. Parking is available in the square.
The route takes in a mix of small roads, sunken lanes and tracks.
The route is not difficult and a pair of trainers is all you need to complete it.

For refreshments, there are three places to eat: Chez Choche in the town centre, Le Creusois in the village of Les Genêts, and Le Faire in S’mote on the banks of the Etang de la Chaume.

Worth a visit

(2) Two bell towers dominate the skyline of Azérables: its 13th-century church, listed as a Historic Monument, and its 19th-century convent.
(5) Greenery as far as the eye can see: at least in summer, as this panoramic path overlooks the village of Azérables from a height of around fifty metres.
Before reaching the viewpoint (6), a tree in its prime: with a circumference of 6 metres, you’re bound to spot this very old oak standing on the edge of the sports ground.

A pleasant route with no real difficulty; my 16-year-old son completed it in flip-flops… along with his 11-year-old sister in sandals. The scenery is relatively beautiful and varied, with very few tarmac sections. A great chance to breathe in some fresh air in the countryside – I highly recommend it!

Hello Riker, and thank you for your feedback.
It’s true that there can be some confusion at certain junctions. We’ll be addressing this sort of issue later this spring by installing directional arrows to clarify the route of the trails.

We look forward to seeing you soon on our hiking trails in the Sostranian region.

An easy walk with beautiful scenery and few people, though I did it on a weekday. Watch out for the yellow markings – they’re very well done, but there must be several routes that overlap. By following only the markings without the app, I ended up getting lost and walking ten kilometres in the end.
