The starting point is in the car park of the Maucor community hall on the edge of the RD206.
(S/E) Head north (towards Saint-Castin) for about 100 metres.
(1) Turn left (marked by oak trees) onto the path that runs alongside the forest and descends towards the Ladebèze stream (yellow markings for "les Berges du Laaps"). After about 350m, the path crosses a track coming from the left. Turn right onto this track for about 40 metres and then turn left into the forest.
(2) After crossing the ford (small bridge) over the Ladebèze stream, continue along the path through the undergrowth. About 800 metres after the ford, you will see a house at the top on the left.
Go around the property via the path that climbs steeply until you reach the tarmac road (Route de la Lande).
(3) Turn right and follow the road downhill for 500 metres.
(4) Turn left onto Chemin Baliu and follow it for 1 km.
(5) Turn left onto Chemin du Bois, which runs alongside the Laaps stream and leads to the Les Canabères housing estate.
(6) Take the second road on the left (Rue des Chênes), then turn left onto Rue de l'Aubisque. At the three-way junction, turn right onto Rue Vincent Partaix. At the end, turn left onto the RD206, then right before the church onto Rue du 19 Mars 1962. At the end of the street, turn left (Route Bayle). At the crossroads, continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection with Rue des Genêts (recently built houses).
(7) Turn left to follow Route des Genêts leading to the RD206. Head left (south) to return to the starting point in the car park of the village hall (S/E).
This reptile gave you quite a scare, but it was probably more frightened than you were.
