From Mazeres to Pardies Piétat

A lovely walk along roads and tracks, including a visit to the Piétat Sanctuary and a return route via the ridges of the Baliros and Narcastet hills, back to the starting point in Mazères.

Description of the walk

Park in Mazères-Lezons behind the presbytery.

(S/E) Turn left onto Avenue de la République and go straight across the roundabout. At the end of the street, go past Rue des Mésanges and take Allée des Coteaux to the right of Chemin Pouchant. Follow the road up to the top, to the junction with the D209, known here as Avenue Mortimer de Lassence.

::1: Turn left onto it, reaching the hamlet of La Chartreuse and the nearby castle.

(2) Continue along the D209 on the edge of a wood until you reach a four-way junction with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

(3) Keep the D209 straight ahead, passing the hamlets of Bordenave and then Domecq. At the next four-way junction, turn right to join the D24.

(4) Take this road with care, keeping to the left, to reach the junction with the D724 a few hundred metres further on.

(5) Turn right onto this road, then turn left to enter the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Piétat. Continue to the orientation table.

(6) Return in the opposite direction to the previous junction.

(5) Take the road opposite, which very quickly turns into a stony track. Pass the hamlets of Batguzère, Goaillard and Besaury. Descend to the Chapel of Saint-Ambroise.

(7) Continue down the hill to reach the D37 in the village of Narcastet.

(8) Take this road with care to reach the Rontignon cemetery.

(9) Leave the D37 and turn left onto Avenue des Coteaux, then at the next junction onto Chemin de Lanette, continuing along Rue du Vieux Bourg until you reach the end.

(10) Turn left onto Chemin des Sources, then cross the Ruisseau des Bouries via the bridge. Cross the bridge quickly to cross the tributary of the Ruisseau des Bouries. Continue along the wall towards the fields, then via Rue de l’Église, to reach the village of Uzos.

(11) Take Rue Pasteur opposite, follow the stream, then rejoin Avenue de la République, turn right onto it and head for the car park at the Mazères-Lezons presbytery (S/E).

We did the route in the opposite direction to the suggested route; it was a mistake because, in that case, the second half is mainly along the road. It was very hot and there is little shade on that section. We stopped for a break near the church of Pardiès Pietat in the shade – very pleasant, with lovely views of the Pyrenees. It’s a shame the church was closed
We’ll do this route again, taking the first part we did and then heading back down towards the Gave de Pau as our return route
But thank you for this route
We hardly saw anyone at all along the route

A lovely circular route to do when the Pyrenees are clear. Note that 95% of the route is on roads.

A lovely walk, though a bit too much tarmac for our liking. Beautiful views and Notre-Dame de Pietat, a great spot for a picnic. Spot on.

An easy route that wasn’t at all tiring; the climb up to Piétat was steady – your description is very accurate. The 20 km went by very easily. Thank you (duration: 6 hours including a picnic break)
