Park in the car park at Élan cemetery.
(S/E) Cross the road, follow the path on the right for about a hundred metres, then turn left; the path continues to climb steeply up to the 270-metre mark. (At the start, you look down onto the clearing at the bottom of the thumbnail).
(1) Then descend to Balaives-et-Butz. As you leave the forest, admire the view of the village, the church and the castle on the other side of the Butz stream valley. In Balaives-et-Butz, cross the Route de Singly (D233), take the main street, turn left at the first junction (Rue du Lavoir), then left again at the next junction (Place Hamaide).
(2) Walk up the hill (Rue de la Coette) to reach the edge of the woods.
(3) Turn right onto the path that leads into a spruce forest. Reach Gros Fau at the Flamanville farm.
(4) Turn left and climb a steep path, continue through the spruce trees, then turn left to reach the Rouges Terres meadows.
(5) At the end of the narrow path, take a wider track on the left that leads away from the pastures, then turn right onto the first main track.
(6) Turn right again to reach the pastures, walk along their left-hand side and continue to the Singly road (D233), (a place known as La Grosse Borne). Follow this road to the right for a few metres.
(7) Turn left onto the path at the edge of the woods. Head towards the place known as La Croix Saint Niçaise.
(8) Head down to the left and follow the path to a large crossroads.
(9) Walk through the clearing, keeping slightly to the right, and reach the road to Villers-le-Tilleul (D33).
(10) Cross the road and continue straight on, going down the path. You will come to a large bend.
(11) Turn left onto the path leading down to Saint Roger’s Chapel. Before reaching it, walk alongside the ponds, built by the monks of Élan Abbey. You can sit on one of the many benches and enjoy the peacefulness of the spot. After taking a look at the chapel, retrace your steps a little.
(12) Turn left onto the path that leads to Élan, following the pond and the Élan stream. At the farmhouse-castle, turn left, then right to reach the cemetery car park (S/E).
