From the Omont wash house to the La Horgne wash house

As part of the art event "Ma dernière chemise" (My Last Shirt) created by Sam Peeters (a resident of Omont), you are invited to walk or cycle from the Omont wash house to the La Horgne wash house. The wash houses will host a temporary exhibition of works of art. These country lanes in the heart of the Crêtes Préardennaises will give you a beautiful glimpse of the region, its forests, its hedgerows and its villages.

Please note: this online hike requires two vehicles if you do not want to walk back (18 km round trip).

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the southern exit of Omont on the grassy area next to the shelter with benches and tables. Another option is just after the cemetery.

(S) Drive carefully back up the road towards the village, then turn right into Rue de Sauville to reach the Omont wash house: behind it you will find an art garden open to the public, which is a good place for a picnic.

(1) Go up Rue de Sauville, then turn right in the village.

(2) Take the first street on the left (dead end) which leads up to Omont church, surrounded by magnificent trees, lime trees and chestnut trees. This is also where Omont Castle once stood. Turn left to pass in front of the town hall and go around it.

(3) About a hundred metres further on, follow the path on the right that leads to Rue de Draize. Continue to the right, keep left at the three-way junction and follow the road downhill to a crossroads at the antique shop.

(4) Turn left and follow the D33: be careful, there is no pavement.

(5) Take the path on your left, walk along the meadows and then enter the woods.

(6) Cross the first bridge (Pont de la Grangette): in wet weather, the path can be slippery and muddy. Then cross a second bridge (Pont de la Bauquerie) and you will come out onto the D28 at the edge of the woods.

(7) Turn right and then left, staying on the D28 towards Les Tailles: you will often see magpies on the pasture posts.

(8) Take the first path on the left and stay on the edge of the Bois de Beauvois: there isa lovely view of the hamlets on the right.

(9) After the short descent, take the path on the left and stay in the woods. You will come out onto a wide white road; follow it to the right for about 300 m.

(10) Go down to the right onto La Horgne. Once in the village, follow the Grand'Rue and you will reach the church with its 300-year-old lime tree, a few metres from the town hall and the museum.

(11) Take the road (D28) on the right towards Omont, then leave it via the path on the right opposite the place called La Tour to reach the wash house (E).
