Head to Tupin, between Ampuis and Condrieu on the old RN86. In the village of Tupin, at the junction of the RN86 and the D124, park in the small car park opposite a chapel.
(S) From the car park, cross the RN86, go around the chapel, then take the RN86 southwards (towards Condrieu) for a few metres. Immediately take the small road that descends to the left (Chemin des Gravières), cross the railway line and continue on this small road (Chemin de l'Île de la Chèvre). At the end, turn right and follow the Lône river.
(1) Take the bridge on the right that crosses the Lône and continue along the path that follows the other bank of the Lône. When you have the choice between the ViaRhôna and the footpath, take the latter to enter the protected area of Île du Beurre.
At the end of the path, cross the bridge over the Bassenon stream, just before it joins the Rhône. Turn left off the bridge to reach a kind of esplanade that serves as a nature observatory.
(2) Continue along the right bank of the Rhône (towards the south). You will pass between a campsite and the Rhône. Just before the end of the campsite, you will see the Roches de Condrieu river port on the other bank.
When you reach the entrance to Condrieu, after a large colourful house (pink), turn right and continue for about 20 metres to Place du Razat (restored houses), then turn back towards the quay. At the next street (Rue du Grand Port), do the same thing (restored houses).
You will arrive at a very pleasant square on the banks of the Rhône. Pass under the bridge over the Rhône and continue along the quay.
Take the first right, Rue de Sauze, and immediately left to follow the Quai du Rhône again (photo 1).
(3) After two large plane trees, turn right (at a right angle) onto Place du Raffour (photo 2).
This small street looks like a dead end, but go to the end and take the narrow passage between a house and a large stone wall. Continue along this passage, which turns right and then left. Go under the small stone railway bridge. Continue straight ahead on Rue Henri Barbuse, cross the RN86 and continue straight ahead on Rue du Marché aux Fruits.
(4) Just before the stream, turn right onto Rue Eugène Genet, then take the first right onto Rue de la Croix and the first left onto Grande Rue.
Take the covered passage on the left, Rue Saint-Martin (just after No. 22) (photo 3), which leads to the market square. Turn right and follow Rue de Belfort.
Take the second left, Rue Saint-Étienne (photo 7), which goes up under an old city gate. Then take the first left until you reach Rue de la Visitation (photos 5 and 6).
Take this covered passageway, then the first passageway on the right, which will take you back to Place du Marché. Turn right to cross the Arbuel stream and immediately after the bridge, turn right onto Rue Claude de Villard (photo 4).
At the junction with Montée de la Caille (dead end sign), take the bridge on the right and continue straight ahead on Rue Ecorcheboeuf. At the end of the street, turn left twice to take Montée des Recollets.
At the cemetery, go down Montée de la Tour, which runs alongside the cemetery on the right. When you reach the D28 (Montée du Rozay), go up for about 20 metres, then turn right onto a pedestrian path, Rue de la Croix de l'Oiseau.
(5) At the crossroads (four roads), turn left onto Rue Cuvillière (photo 8), then take the first right onto Rue de Croyez. When you reach the RN86, turn right and then immediately left onto Allée de la Bachasse, which you should follow until you reach the banks of the Rhône.
Take the path on the left that follows the river, continue straight ahead towards "retour vers collège de Bassenon" (back to Bassenon secondary school), follow the stream to pass under the RN86 and the D124.
When the path reaches a tarmac car park, turn left twice. Turn your back to the roundabout and take the D124 for fifty metres. Just after the stream, at the Condrieu sign, turn left and then immediately right onto the path marked "VTT" (mountain biking).
(6) When you reach the Bassenon road, go up the road on the left, which offers beautiful views of the valleys behind Condrieu. The road makes a hairpin bend to the right, and you will find the signposted mountain bike trail on the left.
(7) Continue along this mountain bike trail until you reach the village of Semons, then head towards the viewpoint via the Chemin du Belvédère (see the view over the market gardens of Ampuis, almost as far as Vienne). Go around the church, behind the church, pass under a porch and take the wide path on the left (not signposted) which begins to descend into the vineyards.
(8) Take the first path on the left, which will take you back up to the road (D124). Turn right and follow the road all the way down to enjoy the terraced vineyards, keeping a clear view of the plain.
At the bottom of this road, when you reach the D386 (formerly the RN86), you will find the car park where you started (E).
