Description of the walk

Departure from the town of Ampuis, in the Rhône department. On the D386 road, between the towns of Condrieu to the south and Saint Cyr-Sur-Le-Rhône to the north.
Parking in the Rue Gabriel Vanel car park: coming from the south, in the town centre after the church, turn right onto Avenue du Château, then right after the level crossing.

(S/E) Departure from the Rue Gabriel Vanel car park. Head towards Rue du Port, south-west.

(1) Head north on Rue du Port, pass under the railway line, then walk alongside the cemetery on your right to reach the church square.
Take care. Cross the D386 and continue straight ahead on Rue De Boucharey. Ignore Rue Du Pont Royal on your left, then Rue du Carcan on your right, to reach a crossroads.

(2) Head straight ahead onto Rue Du Moulin. Follow the stream and you will arrive at a large house with a tall chimney on your right. Go up the winding road after the house and you will arrive at a paved section. Follow the road to the right. After 600 metres, you will reach a hairpin bend.

(3) Turn right, walk past the houses on your left and arrive at the hamlet of Tartaras. Turn 90 degrees to the left onto Route De Charffage. After 1,000 metres, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau du Reyoard.

(4) 50 metres after the bridge, leave the road and take the path climbing steeply to the right. Climb up into the forest and cross it, ignoring the paths leading off to the right. You will come to a road called Chemin De Fayardet. Take this road to the right. After a house on the right, the road becomes a stony path through the forest. You will reach Route du Grand Bois.

(5) Follow it to the right for 150 metres, leaving the road on the right to climb up opposite via Chemin de La Bâtie. After the houses at La Bâtie, the road becomes a path and goes around the Domaine du Grand Bois campsite, located in the forest on the right. Arrive at the campsite entrance and continue opposite for 200 metres.

(6) At the junction with the road, take the hairpin bend to the right onto Route du Grand Bois. After 300 metres, when the road curves slightly to the right, leave it and take the path down to the left. After several hairpin bends, you will reach the stream and cross it. Do not follow the path to the right, but climb steeply to the left along a path with large rocks protruding from the ground. The path becomes less steep as it enters the meadow. You will reach a crossroads near a place called Le Girard.

(7) Turn left. Ignore a road leading off to the right, then a path leading off to the left, and continue straight ahead along Chemin des Grands Frênes. Continue for 300 metres until you reach a crossroads in the middle of the houses. Cross Route du Recru and take Chemin du Grand Plomb opposite. 250 metres after the crossroads, ignore a path branching off to the left. 500 metres further on, leave the main path.

(8) Turn right, slightly downhill, ignoring a path branching off to the right after 50 metres. The downhill path crosses the forest and reaches the D138 road (Route du Grisard). Turn right onto this road, ignoring a road branching off to the right at the edge of the forest. You will reach a crossroads (elevation 379).

(9) Turn right onto Chemin de Rozier. After 300 metres, leave this road and turn right towards the hamlet via Chemin de Mornas. Pass through the buildings of a wine cellar and then, further on, the hamlet of Mornas. At the end of the hamlet, follow the path on the right that descends to the stream. Cross it, ignoring a path running alongside it. Continue uphill through the forest, then across a meadow area to reach a high point (elevation 367).

(10) At the crossroads, take the hairpin bend to the left. Walk alongside the buildings of Les Corins on your right and continue through the meadow to reach a road, which you follow to the right. After 150 metres, turn right towards the centre of the hamlet via Route du Champin. Descend towards a junction with a larger road, Route du Recru. Continue 50 metres to the left on this road, then take a steep climb to the right towards the hamlet via Montée de Ritolas. After 250 metres at the top of the hamlet, you will arrive at a junction.

(11) Turn right at a right angle onto Rue de La Côte Brune. Follow this road for 1,000 metres, almost in a straight line. Leave the road when it begins a steep descent in a right-hand bend and take the stony path on the left. After 400 metres on this path, you will reach the town houses and the junction with Rue de La Brocarde.

(12) Cross Rue de La Brocarde and head opposite, Rue De Ritolas, to reach Boulevard des Allées. Cross the boulevard and take Impasse du Trièves opposite, slightly to the left. At the end of the cul-de-sac, turn right to take the underpass beneath the railway line. Then take Rue du Revoux on the left, which follows the railway line. The street curves to the right.

(13) Ignore Chemin du Bac opposite and continue to the right to reach the banks of the Rhône river. Head right, south-west, along the path that runs alongside the river, ignoring the Chemin des Coutures road. Leave the path to join the road, moving away from the river, and continue towards the park and castle on the left. Pass the castle.

(14) Turn left onto Rue du Petit Port, which leads to the jousting basin on the Rhône. Turn slightly left onto Rue du Port and continue straight ahead for 500 metres, using the church as a landmark.

(1) Return via Rue Gabriel Vanel to the car park (S/E).

Well-described route. Varied landscape between vineyards and woodland, a feast for the eyes with autumn colours.

Please note that the road towards Chauffage, on the 320 side, is under construction. It is impossible to pass. I wanted to post a photo but I can't. You have to go directly to Grand Bois.

The route is estimated to take 5 hours and 20 minutes and cover approximately 18 km. It is suitable for experienced hikers who set off very early in the morning!
As far as we were concerned, we had to interrupt our route (point 7 of 14) and descend via the paved road towards Ampuis, cutting through the vineyards due to the late hour.
Due to a lack of signposting and changes to the names of certain places (as confirmed by locals), we went much further than planned and had to retrace our steps. In total, we walked 25 km over 7½ hours of walking and climbing, and didn't complete the loop.
We were exhausted, but it must be said that the view between the vineyards and forests was magnificent and well worth the effort

Hike done in January. Lovely walk through the vineyards and forest. The paths were badly damaged by water runoff and there were a few obstacles across the paths in the woods, but nothing too complicated. Nice, slightly steep descent back to Ampuis.

A pleasant hike with very little difficulty. A gentle slope at the start of the route between the vineyards is a good way to warm up.
The views are beautiful, and the few tarmac roads are very quiet.
We enjoyed the wild strawberries!
We used the app, so we had no trouble finding our way.
Thank you to the author for this beautiful walk.

A very beautiful hike through the hills above the Coteaux d'Ampuis vineyards. The section through the forest is very pleasant, and the return trip with views of the Rhône is truly magnificent. The route is easy to follow with GPS.
