Description of the walk

From Épinal, take the D36 to Les Forges, then the D460 to Sanchez. From there, turn left onto the D41 to Bouzey. The walk starts from the car park on the Route du Virage.

(S/E) Take the stony path that runs alongside the car park towards the forest. Continue to the first junction. Turn left to reach the Étang de la Comtesse. Turn left to follow the path along the pond’s embankment, at the end of which the Conservatoire des Sites Lorrains has installed an information board.

Green Cross signposting

(1) Turn left onto the signposted path to reach the Route de Renauvoid.

(2) Turn left and walk for 200 m until you reach the Allée des Roches.

Blue Ring signposting

Turn right onto the gravel path, follow the lake and continue straight on to the shore of Lac de Bouzey. Keep left at every junction on the Allée des Roches until you reach Rue du Lac.

(3) Follow it to the left to cross the Bouzey Reservoir Feed Canal. Keep left again when you reach the embankment. You’ll come to a junction after the embankment.

No signposting

(4) Head left and walk along the pond, passing close to the houses. Continue along the road (Chemin des Plages then Rue des Pins) which runs alongside the lake, ignoring the streets branching off to the right. Keep left until you reach the bridge.

(5) Cross the end of the lake. Once on the other side, take Chemin d’Ambafosse which continues straight ahead towards the forest. Reach the bend at the top of the hill, access road to the campsite and sailing school.

Blue Ring and Blue Disc markings

(6) Leave the road and turn right onto a dirt track ahead, which crosses the forest for 1.3 km. Then join the Chemin Vicinal Le Portet. Turn left onto the road to cross a bridge and meet the Route de Bouzey.

(7) Keep left. Follow the banks of the pond back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Thank you to the Club Vosgien for organising this hike and for the work carried out by its teams throughout the year to mark out and maintain these paths.

Worth a visit

Étang de la Comtesse: a true haven of peace just a stone’s throw from Épinal, the Comtesse bog, situated upstream of the Bouzey reservoir, has retained its natural, wild character within a suburban setting.
An educational trail will guide you easily throughout your visit and allow you to discover the biodiversity typical of peat bogs, not far from the town.
A whole range of dragonflies, amphibians, butterflies and aquatic plants can be found here. They are sure to amaze you in complete safety, provided you stay on the paths.

Lake Bouzey: the reservoir was created in 1882 to supply the Canal des Vosges, a working waterway for Voies Navigables de France. In April 1895, the dam burst, leading to tragic consequences. A monument on the lake’s banks, near the dam, commemorates this tragic event.
Fun fact: Lake Bouzey is the largest body of water in the Vosges, ahead of Lake Gérardmer! At full capacity, the lake covers 140 hectares, compared to 116 for Lake Gérardmer.

A lovely little walk – more of a stroll really – which took 1 hour 45 minutes with my three dogs… plenty of moments when we felt like we were the only ones in the world; we passed a maximum of 15 people – which I love – and everyone was very friendly!
An easy walk, alternating between shaded woodland, well-maintained paths and a few stretches along quiet country lanes… a lovely photo exhibition at the dam, and information boards with facts about the local flora and fauna all along the way… great fun for the whole family!

A walk around Lake Bouzey with a glimpse of the Comtesse Pond (can be extended to the bog – highly recommended).
A very easy walk, on roads and well-maintained paths. Beautiful photographs, mainly of wildlife, are currently on display along the embankment.
