Tour of the upper Magnan valley via Saint-Pancrace and the hamlet of La Sirole

This easy walk, partly through woodland, follows the right bank of the upper Magnan valley via the Pont and the Chemin du Génie to Saint-Pancrace, before crossing to the right bank via the Pont du Pommier. After the Pont du Pommier and having crossed the Route de Sirole, you join the Chemin des Crêtes de Bergiade and the Chemin de Bergiade to descend the right bank of the Vallon de Magnan and reach the Boulevard de la Madeleine, after crossing the Ravin des Vallières. This walk can be combined with an exploration of the hidden valleys of Magnan and the Ravin des Vallières.

Description of the walk

From Nice, drive up the entire Madeleine valley and park in a car park just before 491 Boulevard de la Madeleine. There is space for at least two cars.

(S/E) Continue on foot along Boulevard de la Madeleine. Go under a bridge and continue to the circular road bend.

(1) Turn left and cross the Génie bridge. You are now in a protected Natura 2000 area. Follow the Chemin du Génie, which is tarmac but shaded in the afternoon, to Saint-Pancrace. You’ll arrive at No. 2 Chemin du Génie, just before joining the Route de Saint-Pancrace.

(2) Turn left and, just past the gate, take the Chemin de la Sirole, which initially descends alongside the property and then leads to Le Magnan through the woodland.

(3) Cross Le Magnan via the Pont du Pommier and head back up to Sirole via the small pass of the Croix and the Chemin du Pas du Pommier. Cross the Route de Sirole (M914) once, then head back up a concrete path, overgrown with vegetation and pine needles, to rejoin the road. Turn left for about 50 metres to reach the Chemin des Crêtes de la Bergiade, which starts on the right.

(4) Follow this path for about 800 m to the hamlet of Le Grand Bois.

(5) Turn left onto the Chemin de la Bergiade, which descends along the right bank of the Magnan through a forest of pine trees and olive groves. The Chemin de la Bergiade crosses several private properties, but passage is tolerated and used by many walkers. Beautiful view of the village of Bellet. After the hamlet known as Le Pont de Cémente, take the path on the left which descends into the Ravin des Vallières.

(6) Cross the ravine and head back up the right bank, without taking the metal bridge, to join the Chemin de l'Ibac, which you follow to the left.

(7) At the junction, turn left, staying on the Chemin de l'Ibac, and you’ll come out onto the Chemin du Génie. Continue straight on to reach the original fork in the circular part of the road.

(1) Turn left, go under the bridge and head for the car park (S/E).

I was a bit disappointed at first (lots of tarmac) but then really pleased with the trails.

We didn't go on the hike because there wasn't enough space to park even a single car, let alone for a group of 22 hikers!

Taken in cool, fine weather, two days after the rains from Storm Alice.
Although marked in pink on the 1:25,000 map, the route no longer appears to be signposted once you leave the GRP, between points 2 and 7. Keep your wits about you, particularly at the small pass called the Collet de la Croix, and further on, when leaving the Chemin des Crêtes de Bergiades (point 5)
At Pont de Cemente, there is no bridge but a few ruins, still more or less in use, I think, by an olive grower. At this point, with no GPS, no markers on the ground and several paths through the terraces, we were a bit disoriented but not lost!!
At point 6, right at the bottom of the valley, there are two streams that join together, and we began to head back up, on the right bank of the wrong stream. (It’s an extraordinary spot; see below). So, as soon as you see the metal grating footbridge, keep to the right and, on the barely visible path, after about 30 metres, fords the Magnan and then heads back up more or less easily without getting stung by nettles, emerging onto the road where you keep to the left (Points 7 and 1)
These shadowy valleys are a real local geological oddity, where the sun never shines and where the flora is, apparently, quite unique. It looks like the setting for a fantasy film. Of course, it’s not that big, but I found it magical, and a bit unsettling too...The neighbourhood itself is ‘a world apart’, and the road, at the start, spirals downwards... Brilliant!

Hello, a lovely walk. It’s a shame the rope used to climb up the Ravin des Vallières has been removed. It’s true that the route to St Pancrace is a bit monotonous. Long live hiking!

Hello, Thank you for this easy but interesting route for those of us who live in Nice. It’s shaded and unspoilt, apart from the initial climb up the road towards Saint Pancrace. See you soon on the trails
