The Vallon Obscur du Magnan

Discover an unusual, damp and narrow natural space, situated in… Nice! A change of scenery is guaranteed as you walk in or alongside the ‘Magnan’ stream.

This spot, frequented by our ‘elders’ many years ago, is little known to the general public. The Vallon de Magnan, carved out of a type of rock known as ‘poudingue’, forms part of an ecosystem known as the ‘vallons obscurs’.

Please read the ‘Practical Information’ section before venturing into the valley.

Description of the walk

Free parking along the road, at 491 Boulevard de la Madeleine, Nice 06200.
‘Ligne d’Azur’ bus. Route 31. Get off at the ‘Pont du Génie’ stop.

(S/E) From the car park, walk a few metres up the road with the river on your right, heading towards the nearby bend. Just before this bend, which curves to the left, access to the river is on the right, through the opening in the fence provided for this purpose, leading to this small coastal river.

Descend into the bed of the Magnan, situated below the road, and turn left.
Admire the nearby puddingstone cliff. Walk upstream along the stream, which has a very, very low flow and depth – just a few centimetres. Pass under the Pont du Génie and continue for 400 metres until you reach a junction of streams. The valley becomes wilder.

(1) Do not cross the remains of the metal footbridge, situated directly opposite you. Turn right into the Magnan riverbed. Continue along the Magnan riverbed. Pass under the natural rock arch, noting the limestone concretions, then continue to follow the course of the river

(2) A log barrier, approximately 2 metres high, must not be crossed. On the left is a rope providing access to the log barrier; do not use it, as the rest of this walk is reserved for experienced walkers with specialist equipment.

Retrace your steps, taking in the natural surroundings, to return to the car park and the bus stop (S/E).

Hello Courauddidier

Your comment concerns the ‘Vallon Obscur’ … of Donareo, one of whose two most frequently used entrances is situated near the crematorium on the A202, which is indeed closed off by local by-laws (municipalities of Colomars and Aspremont)
In this case, it is the ‘VallonObscur’ of … Magnan

Best regards, B.

A water-based hike that may be of geological interest, but there are animal carcasses, a car and other rubbish...

I’d done the whole thing back in 1994, right up to the Pont du Pommier – it was quite an adventure. I wanted to do it again last year, but I found myself blocked by a tangle of tree trunks 200 metres from the Pont du Pommier – a shame, but for the brave souls who climb up the rope, there are magnificent stalactites adorning the gorge, which narrows considerably – it’s a truly astonishing place. It’s a shame that the local residents don’t respect the river; I came back with a bin bag full of all sorts of rubbish – it was sad – not to mention the two car wrecks that have been in the valley since the 1960s, I think, but the water is doing its corrosive work; in a few years’ time, there’ll be nothing left of them.

Hello Pbrion

This refers to the ‘Vallon Obscur’ of … Magnan, the starting point of which is indicated in the description.

The search you carried out relates to the ‘Vallon Obscur’… of Donareo, one of the two most frequently used entrances to which is situated near the crematorium on the 202, which is indeed off-limits under local by-laws (municipalities of Colomars and Aspremont).

Have a lovely evening, b.
