Tour du Goutaroux

This is an ideal walk for spring or winter when snow makes the peaks inaccessible for hiking but the mid-mountain range remains clear. Le Goutaroux offers superb views of all the surrounding mountain ranges: Mont Aguille and Vercors, Trièves, the Alps as far as Grenoble and Chartreuse. This circular route is an alternative to the return trip from Trézanne.

Description of the walk

Departure from the hamlet of Les Granges, between Saint-Michel-les-Portes and Saint-Martin-de-Clelles: from the RD1075, turn onto Chemin des Granges and park in the hamlet.

(S/E) Follow Chemin des Granges north-west and continue when it becomes a track.

(1) At the first crossroads, leave the track and follow the marked path that climbs up to the left across a field.

(2) When you reach a three-way junction (not shown on the IGN map) near a hunting hut, take the path on the right (still marked). Continue following the markings until you reach the Ruisseau de la Pisse stream.

(3) Just before crossing the stream, do not continue straight ahead but follow the fairly steep marked path that climbs to the left. The path follows the stream for a while then crosses a rocky escarpment before joining a large track just before the Col de Papavet.

(4) Take the track on the left to arrive immediately at the pass where several tracks meet. Follow the one furthest to the left: the path is still marked with a sign indicating Goutaroux. After a few hairpin bends, the path joins the ridge, which is initially in the undergrowth but eventually opens up.

Follow the ridge along its entire length, enjoying the view. First pass the summit of Aubeyron, then reach Goutaroux.

(5) Begin the descent, continuing to follow the ridge. The route is no longer marked, but there is a path, albeit a rather faint one that disappears in places. However, by staying on the ridge line, there is no risk of getting lost, even when the path is not visible.

(6) When the forest reaches the ridge, the path becomes a little more clearly marked. It may still disappear in places, but it continues to follow the ridge, which is always easy to see. Continue the descent on this fairly steep path heading west-southwest.

(7) At this point, the most clearly marked path moves away from the ridge and turns right (north). Leave it and continue straight along the ridge on a path that is barely visible at first, even absent in places, but which becomes more clearly marked further on. After a steep and slightly slippery descent due to the gravel, you will reach a wide marked path.

(8) Turn left onto this marked path and follow it until you reach a water intake at a place called "Au Fontaniou". Continue for about 50 metres to reach a three-way junction.

(9) Leave the main track that branches off to the right and take the path (still marked) that climbs to the left. Continue straight ahead until the path joins a main track at a house in Chalabaud.

(10) Take this track on the left and follow it, ignoring several junctions with other smaller tracks. At a left-hand bend in the track, you will come to a junction with a small path on the right, which is marked with a signpost.

(11) The only direction indicated is in the other direction, but take this path anyway. It turns left shortly afterwards and eventually joins the track you left earlier. Continue on the right.

(12) When you see the first houses through the trees, turn right onto a path that descends to join Chemin des Granges and the starting point on the left (S/E).

Notes

Accessible by bus: "Les Berlioux RN75" stop on the Transisère 4500 line. From the stop, take the path that climbs up and joins the Chalabaud road. Take the road on the left: at the end of the road, you will join the route at point (10).

Along the entire upper part of the ridge, you walk along the cliff. There is no particular risk, the terrain is easy, but a minimum of caution is required.

At point (7), the path that branches off to the right joins the marked trail a little further north. This path is easier (better marked and less steep) than the direct descent described in the itinerary: you can take it if you want to avoid the steepest and most difficult part of the descent. However, there is still a slightly steep section between (5) and (7).

Worth a visit

Just after point (8), take a look to the right: there is a viewpoint over the gorges and the Ruisseau des Côtes waterfall.

Same feeling as other hikers: exceptional views from the ridge, quite a steep climb but very enjoyable. However, the second part of the descent is a bit risky: not dangerous because there is room to move away from the edge, but I think we ended up losing the path, which meant descending facing the slope on slippery and steep terrain: good balance essential and sore toes guaranteed! Not enough to spoil the day, though, and it was a bit of a mini adventure!
So, a very beautiful hike that's not too long, but best suited to people who are used to walking on sometimes difficult terrain. Personally, I'm ready for more!

Quite a beautiful hike, but the return trip is very steep and rather dangerous along the cliff edge. I couldn't see the end of it and I'm not sure that the indicated elevation gain is not less than what I actually did.
If you're choosing a hike in the region, there are other more satisfying ones, or perhaps one starting from Trezanne.

But the view from up there was amazing.

A very beautiful hike starting from Trézanne.
Superb view from the top, but although advertised as easy, the first part is quite steep and the descent is hazardous to say the least (following the ridge).
We managed to find the trail back to Trézanne after a few detours in the forest...

Warning: This hike is not suitable for families and is reserved for experienced and well-equipped hikers (significant risk of falling; very steep and slippery slopes; route along the edge of a precipice).

The hike is very pleasant on the way up, with a beautiful trail, magnificent forest and superb scenery! The view from the top is breathtaking: Mont Aiguille and all the other peaks in all their glory!

However, the descent proposed here is rather dangerous and much less pleasant. You have to descend the bare mountain, with no real paths to follow, amid crumbly rocks: it is very slippery and the ravine is close by. You spend a lot of time facing the slopes and it is quite unpleasant to descend like this.

The route is quite difficult to follow as the paths no longer exist (rockfalls) or are difficult to see (off-trail).

A very mixed review: it was great fun, but we weren't expecting that at all! Be careful!

We did the hike backwards because the first step wasn't clear enough, and then we ended up in Trezanne! But it was worth the detour! Very beautiful view at the top of Goutaroux.
Very beautiful hike, but don't forget your walking sticks.

A beautiful hike that takes us to the highest point of Goutarou. Picnic with a view of the majestic Mont Aiguille. The descent is steep, to say the least, so bring walking sticks to help you get through this difficult section. Once you've passed this tricky point, you'll have a pleasant 5-kilometre walk ahead of you.

We set off at 9 a.m. and reached the highest point at 12.30 p.m. On arrival, you will need to use your hands to climb the last 2 metres, but there is a tree and some sturdy rocks to help you.

The return journey is along the ridge (ignore the detour indicated on the post giving the altitude, there is no marked path, after that it descends quite steeply.

There are no water sources along the way, so bring water with you. It is very hot, even in the woods (at the end of June, it was 32°C in Grenoble). I used up all 2 litres of water I had brought with me and needed at least another litre. Luckily, I wasn't alone!
