Tour of the Huts and Springs of the High Plateaus

A long and beautiful hike, like an orienteering game, in search of huts (shepherds’ or hikers’) and precious springs on the Vercors High Plateaus. Fabulous scenery guaranteed. The highlight, undoubtedly the most beautiful natural site on the Hauts Plateaux, is the Plaine de la Queyrie, where I’d love to be reincarnated as a marmot, with its carved tree and its stunning Roman quarry.

Description of the walk

Start from the Parcours Aventure car park, accessible from the D8a hairpin bend via the forest track.

(S/E) Follow the forest track south-west.

(1) At the junction, continue left along the forest track until the next fork.

(2) Take the path on the right. It crosses the Ruisseau de l'Aupet, then climbs steeply and becomes a footpath.

(3) From this point, you will find very old yellow and green trail markings. You gradually leave the cool, wooded area to reach the Pas de la Selle.

(4) Continue along the path. After about 800 m, leave the path and head right to reach the first hut.

(5) First hut, a shepherd’s hut. If the water supply is low or the streams are dry, extend the detour by 500 m by heading north-north-west to the Fontaine des Bachassons. Otherwise, return to the path you have just left and continue straight ahead on the narrow path, whose faint markings wind considerably. Follow the small cairns.

(7) Second shepherd’s hut. Continue through the green valley towards the south-west.

(8) As you come out of the bend to the left, look out for the barely visible roof of the Jasse de Peyre Rouge and descend to the sheepfold, following the cairns down the stony slope.

(9) Take the south-facing path, marked by cairns, which often contains rusted shell fragments.

(10) At the cairns, leave the well-marked path leading to the Chaumailloux hut on your left. Follow the south-south-west valley straight ahead, skirting Tourte-Barreaux as closely as possible. The path is fairly poorly marked, so follow the cairns.

(11) When you reach the ruins of the enclosure, continue straight on to the Jas Neuf sheepfold.

(12) A large sheepfold with a red roof that can be spotted from a great distance from the heights. After 200m to the south, join the path leading to the junction with theGR®91andGR®93. Turn right.

(13) The junction is poorly marked: no boundary stone or sign, just a small dry pond and a metal post. Follow the red and white markings, turning right.

(14) Optional: at the right-hand bend, leave theGR®s and take the path on the left which leads, after 700 m, to the Cabane and the Fontaine des Bachassons. Low flow: 1 litre of clear water in 3 minutes in early June 2015. Retrace your steps.

(13) Follow the red and whiteGR® markings northwards.

(15) Pass through the Col du Pison (1,655 m) and continue.

(16) At the fork, leave the path leading to the Fontaine de l'Ours on your left, turn right and continue to a junction.

(18) Turn left and head for the Cabane de Peyret.

(19) Continue to the Fontaine des Endettés, 100m further on, to the south-southeast. Fairly low flow: 1 litre of clear water in 2 minutes in early June 2015.

(20) Retrace your steps.

(18) Turn left onto the path offthe GR® which climbs towards the Plaine de la Queyrie. Follow this path which joins theGR®, then branch off amongst the boulders on the slope on the left-hand side of the valley as you climb (some cut straight, others in columns) to reach the Carrière Romaine.

(21) Continue up the obvious path towards the north-east and rejoin theGR® which leads to the Fontaine des Bachassons. A fountain with a good flow: 3 litres of clear water per minute in early June 2015.

(22) From the Pas des Bachassons, the path descends steeply into the bed of the Ravin des Serres and the Ravin du Maupas, then through scree and finally into the undergrowth.

(22) Cross the contour path coming from the left and continue to the right on the path that descends, first in switchbacks and then straight ahead. Continue to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Continue straight on to reach the car park (S/E).

Hello,
The red box with the title "Warning: Very difficult route" is automatically inserted by Visorando when one of the parameters (elevation gain, exposed sections, length, etc.) is significant. In this case, for this hike, there are no difficult or exposed sections. The difficulty actually lies in the navigation and the length.
Kind regards

Hello everyone,

The guidebook states "difficult level, possibly difficult sections". Looking at the guidebook and the comments, I can’t see any perilous or exposed sections, and the difficulty seems to lie solely in the navigation and the length of the hike. Can you confirm this for me?

Please be careful between the huts at Montaveilla and Montagne du Lau: there are many roads close together, but the path is virtually non-existent.
Apart from that, it’s a lovely hike – long for a day’s walk but very enjoyable.

There were six of us on this hike on 1 November; we spent the night at the Cabane Pré Peyret and completed the rest of the route the following day. We chose to do it in the opposite direction so as not to arrive at the hut too late.
We used GPS for navigation, so no complaints – it was perfect.
The scenery is beautiful and varied; we saw several chamois and even a family of wild boars! Brilliant.
The night at the Pré Peyret hut was perfect; there were 17 of us in the hut in the end! The stove is small, but it managed to warm up the hut and heat our Mont D'or and potatoes. When we woke up, it was still 12 degrees in the hut, so very comfortable.
Excellent hike. Thank you

We wanted to do this hike over two days; as we were coming from Lyon, we had a bit of a drive on Saturday morning before setting off, so we started around 10am.
We took a lot of wrong turns during the hike, which meant we ended up running quite a bit behind schedule (landscapes change, and so do roads and routes – it happens ^^).
Add to that our fairly average fitness levels and 15kg rucksacks, and we consequently didn’t manage to complete the 19 km of Day 1 as planned.
Luckily, we were able to improvise and turn back once we reached point 9 when we realised we’d never make it before nightfall.
From point 8, we cut across the plateau to get straight to point 16! I was worried we’d miss out on some lovely scenery by taking this shortcut, but the landscape there was just as magnificent!
Despite this slight adjustment, this hike is very beautiful and a real change of scenery; we were almost alone in the world this October (apart from a few hunters...)
Thank you for this discovery! Next time we’ll be more mindful of our actual capabilities ^^

The terrain is relatively flat: look for the photos. Watch out for water: many of the fountains on the Haut Plateau are dry at the moment

A question for you: is it possible to camp near the Pré-Peyret hut?

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

It’s true that with Visorando we often venture off the beaten track, so there are no markings.
Visorando does not recommend relying on signposting as this can be altered or removed... whereas landmarks provide consistent information.

Visorando provides a detailed description (which could be improved) and an IGN 1:25,000 map. And, if signposting is essential for you, Visorando offers a virtual signposting tool: a GPS app.

This tool, offered free of charge by Visorando, allows you to verify waypoints and thus resolve any doubts regarding navigation.

Kind regards

It’s a lovely walk off the beaten track. You’ll need an IGN map, though, as there are very few signposts, and we had to turn back several times because we’d lost our way.

A magnificent two-day hike.
Plan to arrive early at Pré-Peyret as the refuge is VERY busy, even in mid-October.
Make sure you bring water in October as most of the fountains are dry or have a very slow flow, and there are often queues!
Navigation is a bit tricky on the off-trail section; a GPS is a great help.
Varied scenery, ibex, vultures, eagles, etc.
The return journey is fairly short, almost entirely steep downhill, but still pleasant and not too hard on the knees.

A two-day hike with an overnight stay near the Pré-Peyret hut.
Varied and magnificent landscapes (ascent through the forest, end of the climb with views of Mont Aiguille, grassy plain, rocky, rugged terrain), the essence of the Vercors in a single hike...
The cairns are generally clearly visible off the beaten track, although we know to be careful in certain places.
We saw ibex on both days (watch out for rockfalls in the scree slopes...) and marmots, as promised.
During this late-August drought, the Fontaine des Endettés had a very low flow. The Pré-Peyret hut was full to bursting; we were wise to have made other arrangements for the night.
Thanks for the guide
