Park near the church in La Bâtie or at the very beginning of Chemin des Small Pass (which is closed to traffic a few metres further on). Arrive early, as there are few parking spaces.
Yellow/green markings
(S/E) Climb the Chemin des petits pass towards Plan Giraud Vert until you reach the Barri intersection, which you will reach quickly.
(1) At Le Barri, continue on the left, still heading towards Plan Giraud Vert. At the end of the track, cross the stream.
(2) Follow the path on the right towards Pas des Hollowed-out Tree Trunks. The climb through the forest is gradual and the slope becomes steeper as you approach the ravines. At the edge of the forest, the path becomes a somewhat unstable stone trail.
After a few bends, look for a path that branches off to the right, marked with two yellow/green crosses.
No markings
(3) Take this path which climbs towards Pas du Fouillet. After a few bends, cross the scree slope. You may encounter marmots. Then, a narrow and somewhat vertiginous path (equipped with a handrail) leads you quickly to the pass.
(4) Descend into the plain, straight ahead, towards Grand and Petit Veymont.
(5) Just before reaching the foot of the Grand Veymont ascent, turn off the path to the right to climb towards the Col des Veymonts, then the Petit Veymont, which stands out from the landscape with its very slender, pointed summit.
Descend into the meadow, then cross a small dry stream to climb back up through the grass to the pass, passing under Petit Veymont. You may see ibex in the scree on the left, below Grand Veymont.
(6) At the pass, watch the many marmots taking a break.
Be careful of the steep drop down to Gresse-en-Vercors. One wrong step and you could fall several dozen metres!
The climb to the summit on the right is easy, going up the grassy slope and heading for the first cairn on the left. Then carefully make your way to the last cairn to enjoy the breathtaking view of Mont Aiguille.
(7) Retrace your steps to the pass and then take the Grand Veymont trail.
Marked with a few yellow dots
(5) Turn right to climb Grand Veymont via a stony, well-marked path.
After a climb that becomes a little monotonous towards the end, you will arrive below the summit, which is usually very busy. Climb up to the right to reach the summit cairn.
(8) Walk around the summit to find a quiet viewpoint , taking care as a fall on the east side would be fatal, then descend on the path to the right, diagonally down the slope of Grand Veymont.
After a slightly steeper section, you will arrive at the Agnellerie site where you may encounter female ibex with their young, providing magnificent photo opportunities.
Just after this spot, the descent is very steep and rugged. Descend carefully to Pas de la Ville.
Yellow/green markings
(9) Descend on the right via the path that zigzags across the ridge on the eastern slope to the "Sous le Pas de la Ville" marker.
(10) Then turn right towards Baraque du Veymont. The path passes under the impressive Grand Veymont barrier. If necessary, you can get some water from a ravine at Fontaine du Veymont.
(11) You will reach a track that descends to the Baraque du Veymont.
(12) Just before the hut, turn right and climb up into the forest towards Tiolache. The climb winds through the forest to the top of the Côte de Quinquambaye, where there is another beautiful view of Mont Aiguille. Descend, following the marked trail, to an unnumbered marker.
(13) Continue straight ahead towards Tiolache.
(14) Then descend to the right, towards Le Barri, which you will quickly reach after crossing two dry streams (make sure you spot the path on the other side of the stream).
(1) At Barri, turn left towards La Bâtie. Three chairs in a field provide a final spot to rest, facing Mont Aiguille, before returning to the starting point (S/E).
