Tour of the Auzet Mountains

The Auzet Mountains will charm you, not because of their high altitudes or steep gradients, but for something else entirely. For in the Auzet region, the term ‘Mountains’ refers to the mountain chalets that most farms used to own up there. And it’s well worth a visit.

Description of the walk

On the D7, between Seyne and Barles, lies the village of Auzet. Park in the car park along the D7. Locate the start of the walks.

(S/E) Walk along the wall, climb the steps and follow the path leading up into the village. You will come out onto the street known as Chemin de l’École; follow it to the right, then turn left to go round the church. Walk past the town hall and continue up the road, which winds its way up a few bends. Pass the turn-off for L’Adret on your right, continue left and reach the intersection at Le Forest, after the last houses.

(1) Turn right, following the sign for “Les montagnes d’Auzet, Lauzerot”. The path winds uphill through the forest, then levels out near Pierre Rousse’s house.

(2) Ignore the path branching off to the left towards Jean Médou and continue straight on, along the hillside, until you reach the junction with a forest track.

(3) Turn left to head down the track, then, as you round the bend, look out for the Gîte de Cubertin on the right and head towards it. Once at the lodge, follow the arboretum discovery trail to the right and rejoin the track you left earlier.

(4) Turn left, go through the gate and follow the track which runs through the valley, eventually emerging onto a plateau. Continue to a crossroads.

(5) Keep left along the track and climb up to the houses of Lauzerot. On leaving the hamlet, turn left onto the track that climbs, towards “Les Montagnes d’Auzet – Garnier”, then quickly comes to a level stretch at a drinking trough.

(6) Stay alert to the path’s route. Follow the markings carefully, as they are obscured by numerous cattle tracks. Initially, descend into a small valley between the black earth until you reach a fork.

(7) Ignore the obvious path that leads uphill to the right towards La Bouse, and continue along the valley beside the stream. The path winds its way until it emerges at an open crossroads.

(8) Take the track that climbs to the left. Continue climbing until you reach a small pass.

(9) Leave the track and take the path on the left which leads to the clearly visible houses of Garnier.

(10) Head south, then cross the stream and climb back up, following the signs for “Cabane du Gau”.

(11) Be careful to leave the track and take the path on the left, which runs along the hillside to the Cabane du Gau.

(12) Take the higher path; the lower one is the shepherd’s path. The path runs along the hillside, crosses a stream, then climbs until it joins a track.

(13) Take this track and head due south. At the hairpin bend at the 1654m mark, leave the track to follow the path that cuts across the bend and rejoins the track just before the Col de la Pinée.

(14) At the pass, look out for the path on the left that descends towards the Ravin de Saint-André and crosses the track once before rejoining it.

(15) Follow it downhill, leave it before the hairpin bend to take the path on the left which serves as a shortcut and winds down a few bends before coming out onto a tarmac road (D7).

(16) Turn left and follow the road to Auzet to return directly to the car park (S/E).

this hike is very varied, taking you through forests and mountain pastures, past shepherds' huts. The elevation gain is well distributed and very easy to manage.
i thoroughly enjoyed it!

Done just before the storm with the two dogs. A superb circular route through the cow pastures. We went from hut to hut. The raspberries were delicious. The dogs had a few dips in the streams.
We took a detour at point 11 to climb the ridge and follow it to Marzenc ⛰️ just to enjoy the view. We returned to the trail before point 14 to run through the forest as the storm was approaching. Five Patou dogs chilling in their enclosure by the roadside with the sheep and goats.
A 18.5km circular route with 1050m of elevation gain completed in under 4 hours.
Thanks for this lovely route 🙏
