Tour of the barns and huts of Artigue

Tour of the barns and huts of Artigue, making a large circular loop through the summer pastures via the PR® and GR®10 trails. Pass through Plan de Montmajou and the border markers to Col des Taons de Bacanère. The return journey takes you past two huts and the Cigalère State Forest. A very pleasant hike in the gentle autumn sunshine with beautiful views of the peaks and 3,000-metre summits of the Luchonnais, sometimes whitened by the first snows.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the entrance to the village of Artigue.

(S/E) Walk back down the arrival road for about 250 m.

(1) Turn left onto the path that climbs gently to the Grange de Caubet, which is on the right-hand side of the path.

(2) Turn left immediately onto a steep climb. The path passes through the Bois de Caubet, making three hairpin bends, then runs alongside the Serrette as it leaves the woods until it reaches the Fontaine de Saunères, just below the hut. A short break is in order.

(3) Follow the GR®10 to the right and climb up Serrat de Créspés to reach a crossroads (elevation 1944). From there, head to the Peyrehitte shepherd's hut slightly below on the right.

(4) After a second short stop, continue climbing towards the ridges via a less visible path below the border markers.

(5) Follow the border markers of Plan de Montmajou, then descend carefully towards the Col de Taons de Bacanère. In autumn, the horseflies are not very active. You are now at the border with Spain.

(6) The ridge path heading north-east would lead to Pic de Bacanère and Pic de Burat via the GR®10, but that is another hike that is not on today's agenda. Descend south-west via the GR®10 to the crossroads below the pass.

(7) Take the path on the right through the heather to reach the Cabane d'Ourdies.

(8) Pass the hut, following the west-northwest path, more or less along the edge of the woods, until you reach a crossroads (altitude 1550).

(9) Turn left at the hairpin bend, continue downhill and reach the Cabane du Plan de Bosc.

(10) Climb slightly and continue for about 1.8 km before descending again to finally reach the GR®10.

(11) Return via the GR®10, turning right and heading back to the village.

(12) Pass in front of the church and then the town hall and return to the car park (S/E).
