Description of the walk

Park in the square in Presles.

(S/E) Head west along the Chemin de Serre Cocu, which starts above the inn, and follow it.

(1) At Serre Cocu, you have a panoramic view of the Isère and the Chambarans moraine.
Continue to the right towards the Croix Bernard.

(2) The path heads off to the right (north-east). At the fork, take the left-hand path, which turns south-east before heading due north. Pass a road on the right, then the path heads north-east again to reach the village of Le Faz.

(3). At the crossroads in Le Faz, take the stony path that climbs up in front of you. You begin a steep climb to the Pas de Pré-Bourret, the highest point of the day.

(4) At the pass, ignore the path branching off to the right (it leads to La Lunette. It’s quite a long way, but you can continue and head down further east towards Malleval). The Tour des Coulmes, however, heads straight ahead and begins the descent towards Malleval.
You pass the beautiful, renovated Gontier building. Admire the carvings on the door lintels of this building, standing alone in the middle of a vast meadow.

(5) The path crosses the meadow from west to east. You reach La Vieille

(6) Take a small grassy path that descends to the left. You pass Railletière and enter Malleval-en-Vercors (S/E).

Hello, a friend and I did this three-stage hike in two days. We left at 9 a.m. and finished the next day at 3 p.m. Despite the heatwave, we were lucky enough to discover this hike almost entirely in the woods. However, there was one cruel word: water. We had to refill our water bottles with local residents or with our OKO water bottles, which we were able to fill up at cow troughs
We had lunch at the excellent Les Galopins restaurant in Malval
We covered 24 km on the first day and 16 on the second

We completed the Tour des Coulmes with a group of 19 people. It was a lovely time of year for this route, with green meadows and flowers. Everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can adapt this route, taking ‘shortcuts’ depending on how much time you have; you can shorten it and still enjoy the woodland and the beautiful views.

We did the Tour des Coulmes in the opposite direction, so this is the third day.
A perfect hike for getting a taste of backpacking. Easy, pleasant scenery, ideal when it’s hot (plenty of woodland so there’s plenty of shade).
Stayed at the Gîte des Rimets: very warm welcome, comfortable and friendly.
Auberge des Galopins: excellent meal, perfect welcome.

Two downsides to this hike: a bit too many forestry tracks (in poor condition… when will we see the much-vaunted use of horses… as seen in the magazines?) and for the section between Malleval and Presles: the route could do with a rethink to include a bit more trail and less tarmac road.

A lovely hike all the same.
