Tour of Vaison-la-Romaine via the Colline de Mars

A circular route offering a comprehensive overview of Vaison-la-Romaine through the ages, passing through one of the seven hills that surround it. The Gallo-Roman site of La Villasse, forest tracks, superb views stretching to the Dentelles de Montmirail, Mont Ventoux and the Drôme Provençale, the Roman bridge and the medieval town, not to mention a return via the main shopping street in the lower town, with the chance to stop for a bite to eat or a drink in the large central square.

Description of the walk

Start from one of the car parks in front of the Tourist Office.

(S/E) Head towards the town centre then keep right behind the post office to reach Rue Troque Pompée. Turn right to follow the tourist route leading to the cathedral. Walk past the Gallo-Roman site of La Villasse on Chemin du Couradou, turn left then right into Passage du Cloître.

(1) Take the pedestrian crossings on the left to reach the bridge over the Ouvèze (lovely view of the Roman bridge and the medieval town) and cross to the other side. Turn right at the roundabout. Stay on the pavement until the next junction. Turn right then left to continue along the small road running alongside the Ouvèze. At the end of the industrial estate, follow the D977 along a path through a grassy area until the next junction (Sainte-Catherine cemetery). Cross over towards the recycling centre.

(2) Follow the small road from the recycling centre, cross a ford and join a path on the right at the “Les Roussillons” signpost.

(3) Turn right onto this rather rutted track and continue, staying on the main path (red and white markings) and ignoring the side paths to the right and left.

(4) After two hairpin bends and a wide left-hand bend, you’ll reach the top of a hill just below a vineyard.

(5) Continue to the right. Caution: the slope becomes very steep and uneven. Take care. A rather tricky ford before climbing back up above the valley. Stay on the main path (marked in red and white) until you reach a cleared area, at the junction with a wide track.

(6) Turn right onto this forest track, then left at the D.M.20 sign. The track passes through a beautiful pine forest. There is a lovely view of Roaix from a hut overlooking an olive grove, then look out for Rasteau on its plateau and, further on towards Séguret, the Notre-Dame d’Aubusson Chapel atop its hill. You will reach a tarmac area (water tank 262).

(7) Continue left along the track. A panoramic view opens up over Mont Ventoux, Vaison-la-Romaine and its castle, stretching as far as the Dentelles de Montmirail. You’ll reach a junction where a wide path branches off to the right, running alongside a vineyard and a footpath.

(8) Turn right onto the small path that descends through broom, soon leading you between a dry stone wall and a vineyard. At the end of the wall, turn left and follow the path down until you reach a track. Turn left onto this track, which becomes grassy before ending as a path. Keep to the right through the vineyard, then head straight ahead. Further on, the path enters the undergrowth; it becomes increasingly stony and cluttered with branches. Walk down until you complete the circular loop around the Colline de Mars.

(4) Continue to the right until you return to the “Les Roussillons” signpost.

(3) Then turn left and follow the red and white markings again, turning right a little further down and crossing a ford over rocky slabs. Take the path that climbs steeply until you reach a wide track. Cross it and head down the path opposite (red and white markings). The path joins a small dry stream. Follow the stream for 150 m, then at the Fork in the road, turn left. Stay on the main path (steep climb) until you reach a junction with a vineyard at the top of the climb.

(9) Continue left then turn right to reach the tarmac road. Turn left onto the road and keep right until you reach Chemin du Grand Alizier, which descends into a residential area. Beautiful view of the medieval fortress.

(10) Head back up the Chemin du Rempart, then turn right to go round the medieval town and pass the remains of an aqueduct that carried water from the Groseau to Malaucène.

(11) At the “Frigoulière” signpost, turn left towards the medieval town and head down, skirting it on the right at the foot of the rock, towards the Roman bridge, via the Chemin de la Frégaulière. Impressive view of the rear of the castle. At the “Vaison Pont Romain” signpost, cross the road then follow it to the left on the pavement. View of the Roman bridge. You can reach the medieval town by heading up to the left via Rue du Pont Romain. Cross the bridge to return to the starting car park, following Grande Rue (shops) straight on until you reach the post office, then turn left towards the car park opposite the Tourist Office (S/E).

- A lovely walk in glorious weather (it had rained the day before, but there weren’t too many slippery sections). We completed the route in 3 hours and 40 minutes with our four-and-a-half-year-old daughter (not including a picnic break). Our altimeter recorded 90 metres more elevation gain than the guidebook stated.
- The route is well described and, as mentioned in another review, it partly follows (particularly at the start in town where the path zigzags) the red and white markings of the GR4.
Take care at point 8: on the app’s map, you were supposed to take the single path branching off to the right. In reality, there are two: do not take the prettier one further to the right, which itself quickly turns right again to run alongside a field. Take the smaller path that heads straight into the forest.
- - Right at the start in town, you pass by the ancient ruins. After that, we didn’t mind the short stretch through the industrial and commercial area too much. It isn’t that long, and if you keep to the right-hand side, you walk alongside the river, which adds a bit of charm.
- Halfway along, we stopped for a picnic under a sort of sheepfold by the main track, in a field of olive trees: we spiced up our sandwiches with thyme picked on the spot ☺.
- Along the way, although there’s a lot of woodland (not too bad when it’s really hot), there are also several lovely views, particularly of Mont Ventoux. Overall, we still managed to enjoy the scenery.
Towards the end, the path up to the castle is still closed for works, but we went round it via the path just above on the left, and this low-angle view is lovely.
- Once in town, ice creams galore...

We mainly follow the GR4, which could have been mentioned. Much of the walk takes place in a pine forest, which is a bit monotonous. Fortunately, there’s a magnificent view of Mont Ventoux and the medieval town at the end.

The drive through the industrial estate is a bit long and dreary.

A lovely circular route around Vaison-la-Romaine. A bit of tarmac, especially at the start. It’s a shame the section along the Ouvèze isn’t better maintained; that would make the start of the walk more interesting.
Otherwise, once you start climbing into the hills, this route offers magnificent views of Roaix, Mont Ventoux and the old town of Vaison.

Thank you for this detailed and very useful feedback.
As it happens, I took a group on this circular route yesterday and only read your review on my return. Indeed, from 26 September 2022 until the safety works are completed, the Chemin de la Frégaulière is closed to the public.

I therefore suggest, until the work is finished, going through the medieval town to reach the Roman bridge instead of going round it:

From point 10, head up the Chemin du Rempart and then enter the medieval town opposite. Walk the length of the town, gradually descending, following Rue de l’Évêché (right then straight on) and then Rue de l’Horloge (left) to exit the town via Rue du Pont Romain (right) and cross the Roman bridge.
Then return to the car park as planned.

Thank you to whoever suggested this lovely walking route. This circular route is fairly short, leaving plenty of time to visit the many historic monuments in Vaison-la-Romaine. The route passes through a variety of landscapes and is never monotonous, even though much of it follows wide forest tracks and there are also sections on tarmac roads. The elevated position offers magnificent views in all directions, but to enjoy them fully you need to choose a cloudless day. The route description is precise and very comprehensive. Finding your way is not difficult. You follow the GR4 for most of the way and, on the return journey, the commanding view helps you head towards the castle. Be careful, however, not to miss the turn-off onto the small path at point 8. At the end of the route, at the foot of the castle, access to the Chemin de la Frégaulière (point 11) is prohibited by a local by-law. You must reach the medieval site via the road. I have no other tricky points to mention. The fords are all dry at the start of autumn, but may be trickier to cross after heavy storms. In some places, the paths become more technical, but this never lasts long.
