Le Pas du Loup, Saint-Amand and the Bishops’ Cypresses from Crestet

A walk that takes you through woodland and along the ridges of Saint-Amand, offering 360° views of Provence, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Drôme Provençale. The route is easy on narrow paths.
Shaped like a figure of 8, it can be shortened for those who do not wish to walk the full 16 km.
Equally enjoyable in summer and winter, it alternates between woodland and breathtaking views.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in the village of Creste (around fifteen spaces).

(S/E) Walk up the winding tarmac Château road, then take the Chemin de la Fontaine. Continue along this path.

(1) At the three-way junction, take the path on the left, keeping to the open ground. When you reach the stream, cross it and stay on the forest track for about a hundred metres.

(2) Take the small hairpin bend to the right heading due south and ignore the various paths on your right.
Then pass the 410 mark and continue due west.

(3) At the fork, follow the path on the left and enjoy the woodland.

(4) Cross the stream, take the path on the left and, after a few dozen metres, turn right.

(5) Stay on this lovely wide path as it climbs until you reach theGR®; take this to the right as far as the Cyprès des Évêques.

(6) Turn left towards La Pousterle along the wide, shaded path to reach the Pas du Loup. Notice the gap in the terrain that allows you to pass through this magnificent pass. Sit on the small bench set up by other hikers and enjoy the scenery.

(7) Don’t get it wrong: 30 m after the Pas du Loup, take the unmarked stony path on your right. Stay close to the ridge and do not take the yellow-marked path.

(8) Stay on this narrow path, take a look at the paragliding launch pad and admire the valley, from which you can sometimes see the foothills of the Massif Central. Head back into the undergrowth until you reach the Croix de Saint-Amand. Take a moment to admire the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Rogation Cross.

(9) Now head down the steep path on the right; watch out for the stone steps and take your time.

(10) Turn left onto the pleasant wooded path and join a forest track.

(11) Follow it down to the right.

(12) At the fork, continue along this wide forest track to the right until you reach the Cyprès des Évêques, over 2 km away.

(6) Turn left towards the north-west, staying on the forest road towards La Verrière.

(13) Leave the main forest road and take the small grassy path on the right which runs alongside the forest road to the Croix de Verrière.

(14) Head right along the path to the stream you passed on the way there.

(4) Turn left towards the fork you passed on the way there.

(3) Turn left onto the stony path.

(15) At the junction, turn right onto theGR® you have just joined and continue to the first fork you come to.

(1) Continue on to the village, the Chemin des Fontaines, La Route du Château and the car park (S/E).

A hike completed using the guidebook and the GPS track.
Beautiful panoramic views, lovely sections through the woods, varied and very pleasant trails. The only slight downside: the return section along the forest track, which is a bit less interesting compared to the rest, but it’s a lovely hike. Thank you for sharing this route

(Route followed using GPS + PDF) ..A very pleasant route up to point 10, not particularly interesting up to point 13 (wide path); no particular difficulties..for those who enjoy panoramic views: (a shame there are no ruins or other historical sites along the route); well worth a go..

§ 2: Do not refer to the stream as it did not exist or no longer exists (probably dried up), but instead “take the path on the right before the houses at Font d’Oyers”.
Admittedly, the appeal of the “Du Crestet au Pas du Loup” trail is limited; however, it is a completely different story if you continue on to the St Amand ridges or follow the route of the new route along the ridges.

Thank you, Jacky Arnoux, for this lovely hike that I went on with Jean-Luc; the summit is stunning, with views of the Dentelles and a near-360° panorama.
