The start is in Voreppe, in the hamlet of Chevalon de Voreppe, signposted towards the Chevalon cemetery, at the end of Chemin de Malsouche; the car park is in front of the old cement works.
Follow the yellow-marked signposts numbered 10.
(S/E) Walk past the cement works buildings, which lead to the hamlet of Sautaret. Continue to the junction by a stone wall.
(1) To the left of the buildings destroyed by fire, take a path that climbs up to a balcony-like level above Chevalon de Voreppe to reach the Mont-Saint-Martin road.
(2) Walk down this road to the right for 20 metres, then turn left onto a path that rejoins the road further up.
(3) Walk back down this road to the left for about 50 metres and turn right onto the Chemin du Cuchet, which leads directly to the hikers’ car park at Chalais Monastery.
(4) Make the most of the highest point of the walk; this is a good opportunity to take a break and visit the monastery.
The descent path begins at the far end of the car park, on the left, with the monastery on your right.
Head down until you reach a forest track that leads to a junction with a hunters’ hut on the left. This is the Pré du Moulin.
(5) Continue for a few metres and turn right onto a path that enters the wild valley of the Malsouche stream.
It leads onto the path to the cement works quarry, which you should follow to return to the starting point (S/E).
