Preliminary remark: The only difficulty with this route is finding a place to park. We recommend parking in the Abbey car park on Rue du Perthuis. The car park at the harbour is tiny.
(S/E) Take Rue de l'Abbaye south towards the harbour. You will reach it at the tide mill.
(1) Turn left onto the cycle path behind the car park, on the sea wall. You will come to a fork.
(2) Continue along the dyke on the right. You can shelter from the wind behind the dyke. Walk along the Petite and Grande Tonille parks and rejoin the cycle path. You will then come to a crossroads with a shed.
(3) Turn right towards Grouin beach. Stay on the beach instead of following the marked footpath, which tends to be muddy in winter. At the end of the beach, behind the car park, continue along the path along the coast.
(4) Pass behind Fort du Grouin, a beautiful, well-restored private property. After the fort, climb onto the dyke, then join the road for a few metres. You will come to a fork.
(5) Leave the cycle path and follow the coastal path. Climb up onto the sea wall to see the sea and enjoy the icy, invigorating north wind in winter. Pass Pas de la Vette and reach a boat access point before Pas des Gaudins.
(6) Here you have two options:
- Continue along the sea wall, at the Pas du Préau car park turn left onto the marked path and follow it to the junction of Rue du Pertuis and Route de Loix at .
- Leave the coast here and turn left (south), as shown on the map. At the T-junction, take a first turn right then left to follow Rue du Pertuis. Continue along this road until you reach the junction with Route de Loix.
(7) Continue straight ahead, diagonally to the left, along Rue du Pertuis. Go straight ahead, paying close attention to traffic, to return to the car park where you started (S/E).
