Tour of the Ouémo peninsula from Sainte-Marie Park.

Route through the residential neighbourhood of Ouemo, taking in Sainte-Marie Urban Park (very well laid out, with sports areas and children's playgrounds), the Ouemo Mangrove with its rich biodiversity, and finally multiple viewpoints overlooking the sea.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the edge of Voie Maurice Meunier.

(S/E) With your back to the road, cross the cycle path and join the footpath. Head north on the left until you reach the Maison de la Biodiversité.

(1) Turn right and take the footbridge that crosses the small inlet and leads to the mangrove. Continue straight ahead at the intersection with the return path, go to the next intersection and take the path on the right.

(2) Continue to the left: a barrier blocks the road to cars but not to pedestrians. Reach Rue Paul Boissery and continue straight ahead to the intersection at the top of the slope. Take Rue Arnold Daly on the right, then turn left onto Rue Le Carrour, which ends in a cul-de-sac. Walk to a small stony dyke for your first view of the sea and the Tina peninsula to the north and the Fourmi islets.

(3) Turn back, return to Rue Arnold Doly and continue left for about a hundred metres. Then turn left onto Rue Réveillon and continue to Parc du Fort Ouemo for a 180° view of the sea.

(4) Walk around the park and turn back to Rue Arnold Doly. Follow this road, turning left.

(5) Take Rue de la Boudeuse on the left until you reach the sea and a superb mangrove exposed to the waves: view of Fort Ouemo to the north and the islets to the east.

(6) Turn back and return once again to Rue Arnold Doly.

(5) Follow it south on the left until you reach the small park at the Ouémo Multipurpose Area. Take Rue Le Prédour on the left, then turn right. A little further down, on the left, is an access to the beach: there is a risk of sharks, so check with the Tourist Office.

(7) Once you've set foot on the sand, return to Rue Le Prédour, turn left onto it, then take the first street on the left, Rue de la Riviéra. Continue until you reach a car park built slightly higher up, overlooking the entire bay to the south: 180° panorama of the bay and Îlot Sainte-Marie.

(8) Continue along Rue de la Riviéra, which is circular and becomes Rue Arnold Daly. Head to the Parc de l'Aire Polyvalente de Ouémo.

(9) Take the concrete path on the left that winds down the hill and leads to the mangrove. Pass through the mangrove entrance gate, then take the path on the left in front of the hut and continue to the intersection.

(10) Turn left onto the bridge, then left again onto the path you took at the start. Once you are facing the Maison de la Biodiversité, turn left again to cross the park and return to the car park (S/E).
