Mount Tereka from Kuendu Beach.

White sandy beach, turquoise waters, then a track with sea views and a gentle climb to the panorama over the northern and south-eastern bays of Nouméa. The neighbourhood was a hotspot during the 2024 riots, and several burnt-out cars are still visible when crossing the neighbourhood along Avenue James Cook and also on the way back down.

Description of the walk

Park at Kuendu Beach car park, less than 10 minutes by car from the centre of Nouméa.

(S/E) Start by crossing the beach towards the point. Follow the path up the small hill, then go to the end of the headland to enjoy your first view of the magnificent Kuendu Beach.

(1) Retrace your steps, then turn right and follow the path back to an intersection.

(2) Take the path on the left to return to the concrete road (Avenue James Cook). Follow it to the right-hand bend and turn left onto Route de la Pointe Kongou.

(3) Look for Route du Mont Tereka on the right, which you will take on the way back, and continue straight ahead on the road, which is paved at first but gradually turns into a track. Stay on the main road to go around Mont Tereka to the west.

(4) Take the track that climbs to the right.

(5) Follow the small path on the left for about 200 metres.

(6) Take the main path on the right until you reach Route du Fort Tereka. Then turn left to reach the first viewpoint and the fort's cannons.

(7) Climb the stairs between the cannons and head to the small green-roofed hut for a wider view. There is an orientation table there.

(8) Take the path on the left, heading east, following the orange dots and arrows that mark it. Follow it until you reach Route du Fort Tereka a little further down and continue straight on the main track. You will arrive at a cemetery of burnt-out cars: you don't see that everywhere.

(9) Stay on the track, which slopes to the right and descends to join Route de la Point Kongou.

(3) Turn left towards Avenue James Cook, and follow it to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No water on the trail, so protect yourself from the sun: water, hat, sunscreen, etc.

There are many small private properties around Mount Tereka, so stay on the paths and do not cut across any properties.

Avoid the neighbourhood in the evening and at night: in the morning, there is no one on the route except fishermen.

Worth a visit

A very good route, offering beautiful views of the surroundings of Île Nou.
The paths are either gravelly in the sun or through woodland with some tall grass. Overall, the route is easy to walk and pleasant.
The view from the summit and the view of the bay and the beach are well worth the modest effort required.

A few tips:
- The first section up to point 1 is through undergrowth/groves of little interest. Heading further along the road to join the dirt track on the right is slightly longer but clearly less strenuous.
- Parts of the path are prone to flooding or may be blocked by large puddles. It is possible to get around them by walking through the tall grass.
- Some paths between point 4 and point 7 are in tall grass, visible but not cleared. Some are just dirt tracks with tractor tracks.
- There may be stray dogs. We came across one, which was not at all aggressive, in fact very friendly, and accompanied us for the whole route.
