The Ouemo Mangrove from Nouméa city centre.

Park in the huge market car park on Place Moselle.

(S/E) Head south, pass the American monument, then turn left onto Rue Duquesne after crossing Avenue du Maréchal Foch. Continue straight ahead until the second intersection.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Georges Guynemer. Take the right turn up Rue Bichat, continue straight ahead and continue on Rue de Metz. Cross Boulevard Extérieur Auguste Mercier and continue to the junction with Route du Port Despointes.

(2) Turn right, pass in front of Maison Célières (a monument that can only be visited on Thursday to Saturday mornings), then turn left onto Rue Bougainville. Pass two streets on the left.

(3) Take the next street, Rue de Bretagne, then take the first right, Rue de la Seine. Continue straight ahead to the roundabout, then straight ahead again to Rue de Charleroi.

(4) Follow this road, turning right, and arrive at Baie de Sainte-Marie by joining Voie Maurice Meunier.

(5) Cross carefully, then turn left and walk for about 300 metres. Head towards the seafront on the right, then continue on the left to follow it. You will reach a fork in the road.

(6) Turn left and head towards the Maison de la Biodiversité.

(7) Turn back slightly, take the footbridge towards the mangrove and then follow the path, turning right at the first intersection. Walk around the mangrove, enjoying the birds, fish and crabs, then turn left towards Baie de Sainte-Marie to follow the coastline as closely as possible. Return to the path you took on the way there.

(6) Continue straight ahead, following the path between the sea and Voie Maurice Meunier. Go to the large roundabout at Port Despointes.

(8) Go around it on the right and go up along Route du Port Despointes. Continue straight ahead until you reach the junction with Rue Faidherbe.

(9) Turn left and follow the road uphill, which curves to the right. Once at the top, rejoin Route de l'Anse Vata and follow it in the same direction.

(10) Turn left onto Rue Charles Gaveau and follow it until you return to the first intersection you passed on the way there.

(1) Continue straight on Rue Duquesne until you return to the American monument and then to the car park (S/E).

Easy hike, but as always in New Caledonia, bring protection from the sun and water.

There are many small shops along the way, so you can easily stock up on supplies as you go.

(7) Maison de la Biodiversité: open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
