Description of the walk

You can reach the hamlet of La Pépinière either by coming from the Col du Fût d’Avenas via the D18 or from the Vauxrenard side via the D86. Park in the car park above the Pépinière house.

(S/E) From there, take the path at the end of the car park which climbs into the forest. Follow the path for about 200 m, then turn right onto the path. At the end of the area reserved for storing trees (loading bay), take the path on the left, then left again a few hundred metres further on, and left once more a little further on.

(1) When you reach this junction, head straight up for 100 m to reach the stonemason’s workshop situated below the path and visit the site of the former quarryman’s home. Then climb up through the woodland opposite the workshop for about 100 metres. In front of you lie the old Triassic sandstone quarries. Take the path on the left as you leave the quarries, then follow the track that climbs to the left and winds through a beautiful coniferous forest.

(2) At the junction, turn 90° left towards the west and follow the forest path which veers south.

(3) At this point, turn sharply right and continue along the main path, which curves sharply to the right. About fifty metres before the junction (elevation 799), you can stop at the Pierre de Saint Martin, situated in a clearing on the left-hand side of the path.

(4) Then take the path on the right, which leads straight back to your starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Among the highlights of this walk, we invite you to discover:

- The Triassic sandstone quarry (250 million years old), dating from a time when the region was covered by a shallow sea at the bottom of which sand accumulated; once compressed and consolidated, this produced a rock that is easy to carve. It was largely with stones from this quarry that the church at Vauxrenard was built in the 11th century.

- The stonemason’s cellar: this is a small cellar in excellent condition, bearing witness to the stonemasons’ occupation of the site in the 19th century.

- The Saint Martin Stone: a large, flat rock associated with a legend featuring Saint Martin, patron saint of the parish of Vauxrenard, and the devil, his eternal enemy...

Before setting off again, you might want to satisfy your curiosity by visiting the three ponds found in the forest very close to the forest house. To do so, take the small path that leads past the house and into the forest for about two hundred metres. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic, but please ensure you treat the area with the utmost respect.

You’ll find plenty of detailed information about the features of this route and its surroundings on the Collectif de la Pierre de Saint-Martin website.

Beautiful hike through the woods with a little snow remaining. We had to leave from the village because access by car was not recommended, so the hike was longer and had more elevation gain. Very beautiful hike with a straightforward route that was well explained. Thank you to the person who posted this hike.

A lovely, peaceful walk with friends in the late morning, above the morning mist, secured by two yellow vests after passing five cars full of hunters heading off for their lunch break..
The start of the circular loop worried us because we were using the relatively muddy forest path travelled by vehicles, but we then found ourselves in the undergrowth with the scent of pine trees and mushrooms.
Don't forget to download your walk to avoid areas with poor reception.

A pleasant little walk. Beautiful forests and a few scenic spots; and a few minor difficulties caused
logging and tree trunks and branches blocking the path... but overall a good route (done
with children aged 6 and 3).

An easy walk through the forest, which isn’t very busy. Some parts are very pretty, but logging means there are a few rather bleak sections (cut branches, rutted paths, etc.)
