Tour of Buègue Mountain

This hike allows you to visit a pretty village and the remains of one of the oldest abbeys in Gaul, as well as enjoy the landscapes of the Drôme.
With a bit of luck, the vultures of Rocher du Caire will accompany you along the way.

Description of the walk

Parking is available on the D570 at the foot of the village of Saint-May.

(S/E) Take the small road that climbs up to the village.

(1) At the hairpin bend, continue straight on towards Bodon Abbey. The road then climbs steadily.

(2) After passing the chapel and the remains of Bodon Abbey, just after a house, take the track that starts on the left and climbs towards a group of houses (farm and lodge), which you must pass to continue climbing to the Col de Saint-May.

(3) At the pass, a path marked with orange dots allows you to change sides (a few metres to the left of the path marked "Rémuzat - Léoux"). This path starts on the mountainside before beginning a relatively steep descent.

(4) Pay attention so you don't miss the point where you need to turn left onto theGR® de Pays "Tour des Baronnies" trail. The junction is discreet and the markings are not very visible in this direction. Follow thisGRP® trail, which climbs up to the Col de Pensier pass and then descends to the first houses of the hamlet of Les Bœufs.

(5) Join the D570 just before the bridge over the Ruisseau de Léoux, but do not take the road. Instead, turn left onto a beautiful track that offers stunning views of the gorges.

(6) Pass the Botte farm and soon the track turns into a path that descends fairly quickly to the Saint-May road.

(1) Follow this road to the right, which will take you back to the starting point (S/E). At the first bend above the village, there is a path that allows you to visit the village.

A hike without much interest, especially since the first few kilometres (and therefore the last few as well...) are on a magnificent stretch of tarmac... It is possible to drive up to the abbey chapel to quickly reach a REAL hiking trail. There are some nice views of the gorges, but most of the time, the hike takes place in the woods

We parked in the car park at Bodon Abbey and headed towards the Caire rock to see the vultures and enjoy the view over Remuzat. We joined the route at the Col de St May via the path running along the Caire rock face (yellow trail).
After the hamlet of Léoux, we saw more vultures nesting on the ridge along the D570.
After the Botte farm, we joined the tarmac road and turned left to return to our vehicle.
A very pleasant day. 15.380 km - Elevation gain: 905 m / Elevation loss: 919 m

what phrase would you add in (4) to improve the description?

in my opinion, part of the description is missing: point (4) does not mention the passage to the Pensier Pass (ascent and descent). Thank you. Daniel Castellino

a bit too much tarmac road at the start and finish.

hello,

It is possible to start from the small village of Léoux, thus avoiding the road between St May and wpt 1.

Possible alternative: Instead of climbing directly above Bodon Abbey towards the Col de St May, you can join the route climbing from Rémuzat via the St Laurent plateau, reach the edge of the plateau and follow the entire ridge to Devès and the Col de St May

very steep path over 10 metres on the return journey in the hairpin bends between La Botte (no. 6) and the road (no. 1) at the
the Aumas ravine. Avoid in wet weather.

a beautiful walk but lots of roads or forest tracks
You can shorten the walk by leaving your car in the car park at Bodon Abbey, which avoids a large part of the tarmac road, and you can always stop to visit Saint May on the way back
Allow 4 hours from Bodon
You can add a return trip to the Saint Laurent plateau (10 minutes by car + 1 hour on foot) to see the vultures
