The Cols d'Ambonne and de Bascoulet from Montréal-les-Sources

A circular route starting from Montréal-les-Sources that will allow you to discover the Drôme Provençale.
No difficulty, even though the climb is steady. From the Col d’Ambonne, don’t hesitate to climb up to the telecoms pylons to discover a magnificent 360° view stretching from the Ventoux to the Dévoluy and taking in the surrounding mountains (Angèle, Miélandre, Cougoir, Aiguilles de Remuzat)
3/11/2023: The route has had to be altered.

Description of the walk

Park in the small visitor car park just before the entrance to the village.

(S/E) Head back towards the village.

(1) Turn right at the fountain just past the car park. Continue along the road without crossing the Ruisseau de Saint-Julien. Join another road at a junction at elevation 684.

(2) Cut across the hairpin bends whilst following the road’s direction. Pass the first junction on the left. Continue left at the next junction.

(3) Take the forest track on the right which joins the road, which you leave behind at the next hairpin bends.

(4) There are several possible routes up to the Col d’Ambonne.
Continue along the track heading south-east. The climb is fairly steep but well marked. Keep heading south-east to reach the Col d’Ambonne.

(5) From the pass, follow the track that climbs towards the telecoms pylons.

(6) Turn left at the fork to reach the pylons. Do not attempt to take the track on the right (see practical information) and reach the highest point of the hike at an altitude of 1,299 metres.

(7) Pass the pylons to find the orientation table, which offers a splendid panorama. Turn back towards the Col d’Ambonne.

(5) Look for the track heading north-north-east along the ridge. A sign nailed to a tree points towards Col Bascoulet.

(8) At the crossroads with a sign indicating ‘panorama’ on the right (this is the orientation table), take the path that descends slightly to the left. General direction: north. Follow the path to the junction with a track.

(9) Descend along this forest track to Col de Bascoulet.

(10) Take the track that descends to the left. Pass in front of the Ferme de Beaumette and continue to the junction with the Chemin des Vignasses, which is a road.

(11) Turn right onto this road.

(12) Leave the road and take the path on the left, which rejoins the road and takes you back to the car park in Montréal-les-Sources (S/E).

Notes

At (6), the path leading down to the right, on the other side of the ridge, crosses private property.
Do not go there, especially during the summer grazing season (the owner’s warning is posted at the start of the path).

There are no water sources along the route.
In Montréal-les-Sources, there is a fountain with drinking water.

The route of this hike poses no danger, but requires sustained effort to reach the summit. The views you’re hoping for are well worth the effort!
The duration of the hike is slightly overestimated.

I wanted to go for a hike in the Sahune or Rémusat area, so I chose this one.
It took me less than an hour and a half to reach the Col d’Ambonne (1,173 m).
A break for tea and raisins before the climb up to the “Montagne de Poët”, which rises to 1,299 m and is dominated by an electricity pylon. You mustn’t take the track but a path with a sign pointing to “Tarendol”. Once you reach the “Le Tuve” sign (1,230 m), carry straight on and do not turn right, so as to reach the pylon and the orientation table. Stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of the Dévoluy and the Écrins.
You can descend directly along the path leading to the Col de Bascoulet without going back via the Col d’Ambonne, but I opted for safety by returning there to follow the yellow and red markings from the start.
At the junction with the sign for “Panorama”, the path on the left is signposted “Saint May”, but makes no mention of the Col de Bascoulet. As the route description said to follow this path on the left, that is what I did. A long descent, initially through the forest, before coming out onto a track. At no point did I see a sign for “Col de Bascoulet”, even though I did indeed follow the route description.
A short 15-minute break for lunch, less than 20 minutes from the village.
All in all, a relatively easy 4-hour 20-minute hike with a 40-minute break.
It’s a shame the weather was a bit overcast, but the magnificent views from the “Montagne de Poët” make the walk well worth it...

A lovely walk with some beautiful views. An easy route with no issues following the path. On days when the mistral is blowing, you can have lunch on the south side of the Col d'Ambronne, sheltered from the wind.
