The Saint-Laurent Plateau and the Rocher du Caire

A walk across the Saint-Laurent Plateau and its ridges to the Rocher du Caire, where you can enjoy a lovely view of the Oule, the Aiguilles de Rémuzat and even the snow-capped peaks of the Dévoluy. Visit to the cemetery overlooking the village of Saint-May, with a beautiful view of the Eygues, the gorges and the Léoux stream. Vultures are part of the spectacle, especially around the Rocher du Caire.

Description of the walk

Arriving via the D94 at the village of Saint-May, park at the entrance to the village in the car park running alongside the climb. Do not follow the road to Prieuré and Vautours; instead, take the sharp right-hand bend leading into the village.

(S/E) Walk up the village road.

(1) Pass Rue du Lavoir on your left, then walk past a beautiful church and head towards the cemetery. A curious flight of steps leads to the top of the village where the cemetery is located. It’s well worth the detour; the view over the Route des Alpes and the Eygues is magnificent. Please be quiet and respectful of the site. With a bit of luck, you might spot a few vultures circling above the village.

(2) Retrace your steps back to the village centre.

(1) Take Rue du Lavoir on the right, which goes uphill, passing the wash house and a beautiful house with some wooden carvings. At the junction, take a path on the right which continues uphill.

(3) At the junction with the road, continue along it to the right (there isn’t much traffic but do take care, as the road is very narrow) until you reach the path leading uphill to the right.

(4) Follow this path to the next junction with the road and the ‘Prieuré’ sign, where there is a table with benches.

(5) Continue along the road.

(6) Turn left to visit the Chapel of Saint-Laurent, all that remains of the ruins of the former Abbey of Baudon.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) Follow the road up to the Vautours car park.

(8) Leave the road and take the track on the left which climbs gently to the Col de Saint-May. Ignore all the paths branching off to the left and right.

(9) Admire the Montagne de Buègue, which will remain behind on the left, then take the fairly steep path that climbs to the right towards the ridges.

(10) After a well-deserved break and a magnificent view of the Oule, the Aiguilles de Rémuzat and even the snow-capped peaks of the Dévoluy, continue along the ridges to the Rocher du Caire, where the vultures put on a real show in the early afternoon.

(11) Take the track that first descends to the Vautours car park, then head down the road to the junction at the foot of the Chapelle Saint-Laurent.

(8) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the initial fork.

(1) Turn right and head back to the car park at the entrance to the village (S/E).

The walk took place in absolutely glorious weather.
A walk with no real difficulty, very pleasant in terms of scenery.

We shortened the hike by parking the car at the old priory because the climb from St May by road is not interesting. On the other hand, the entire ridge section is magnificent and the sight of the vultures is well worth it (we should have brought binoculars).

Completed in December 2025 under beautiful sunshine, a very pleasant hike. However, as already mentioned by other hikers, it is better to park higher up (there is a car park at the ruins of Bodon Abbey) because the journey on the tarmac road from St May is not the most pleasant (especially as you have to make the return trip). It is worth visiting St May on the way there or back before the hike.
There are beautiful views from the plateau and ridges. It can get crowded at the Rock of Cairo.

A very beautiful hike. According to the pedometer, it is much longer than what was stated in the description.
Visiting the village is part of the appeal of the hike, but this is followed by a long stretch along the road, which could be avoided by parking further away, as there are other car parks near the loop.

There were ten of us on the hike. The scenery was magnificent. The ridge section and the ‘Vulture Trail’ were quite busy on this bank holiday. We didn’t spot many vultures. It’s best to do this route before the summer heat sets in, as there’s very little shelter.
