Description of the walk

Start and parking at the car parks next to Simandre-sur-Suran town hall.

(S/E) Take the road to Grand-Corent, cross the Suran bridge and, at the three-way junction (crossroads), turn right into Rue de la Gare, which then turns left.

(1) At the end of the street, turn left onto Chemin de Grammon, cross the railway line and take the path on the right at a place called La Foulliat. Follow this path, which passes under a power line and then turns right after a junction.

(2) Turn right heading west. At the first fork, go right. Do the same at the next one and continue for about 500m. Then turn sharply left and take the first left to reach the pylon and the Condamine viewpoint.

(3) Take the wide path on the right, passing under a power line again. At the junction, turn left and continue straight on until you reach a road.

(4) Follow it to the left. At the crossroads with a cross, turn left then continue along the path on the right to reach a junction where there is a stone bench.

(5) At the D98, turn right to enter the village of Grand-Corent and head towards the church. Turn left, then right at the first junction. At a place called La Risolière, continue left, then left again at the second path, Impasse des Chaplannes.

(6) Turn left onto the path leading to the small village of Racouse, passing under power lines twice and leaving a path on your left.

(7) In front of the farm, head up to the right to enter the village, continue up towards the square and take the path opposite which runs behind the houses. At the end, head up to the left to rejoin the road and turn right for a good fifty metres.

(8) At the three-way junction, take the middle path and continue. You are now on theGRP® Tour du Revermont, marked in yellow and red. Follow the markings, ignoring the paths on either side, and continue to a junction with a cross.

(9) Turn right, then, under the power line, take the path on the left to the D59b. Follow it to the left, then leave it on the right. At the junction, continue for fifty metres to the left, then turn sharply right onto a small path through the trees to reach viewpoint 1 over Bonbois. Take care and proceed slowly as the trees are right on the edge of the cliff.

(10) Continue left along this path by the cliff to reach viewpoint 2, which offers a second view of Bonbois.

(11) Continue along this path again and, at the junction, turn right until you reach viewpoint 3 overlooking Corvessiat.

(12) Retrace your steps and continue along the path to the road. Turn right until you reach the D936.

(13) Cross this main road (take care) and continue along Rue sur la Roche to the end to reach Grande Rue. Then turn left to reach Corveissiat town hall.

(14) Walk for about 50 metres, then turn left onto Route de Lavillat. Leave the village and, after the power line, turn left onto the path. At the end, turn right onto the road. At the next junction, turn right again onto Route de l’Échelle to reach the entrance to the village of Lavillat.

(15) At the village entrance sign, take the path on the left and continue to the end to reach Route de la Combe.

(16) Turn right, go round the pumping station at the hairpin bend and take the path on the right which climbs quite steeply. At the top, veer left onto the road and continue to reach the centre of the village of Arnans.

(17) Continue straight on along Route de Chavannes until you reach the Croix Bataillard.

(18) Take the second path on the left and, after about a hundred metres, turn left to continue to Chartreuse de Sélignac.

(19) In front of the abbey, go through the small gate and then follow the path on the right between the two stone walls.

(20) At the end of the wall on the left, turn sharply left to follow it on the other side. Small openings for pedestrians and beams along the wall will allow you to pass through gates and over small streams. Then go under the RD936 and continue to the crossroads.

(21) Turn right, cross the Sélignac stream and take the first path on the left, which climbs steeply. Continue climbing to the top, keeping a general south-westerly direction.

(22) At the junction, turn onto the path on the right then veer left: you will arrive at a large crossroads.

(23) Turn right, then take the second path on the left signposted towards Petit-Corent. Continue along the Chemin du Levant to reach Petit-Corent.

(24) At the cross, turn left and immediately right onto the small path leading downhill. Cross the Chemin du Petit-Corent and continue straight on along the path opposite to reach Banchin.

(25) At the road, turn right and take the second right, the Chemin de l'Abreuvoir. At the end, first turn left then right to take the path leading down towards the river.

(26) Cross the Suran over the stones, then cross the field to the path leading to the Pierre Fiche menhir, situated on your left near a tree.

(27) Retrace your steps and continue along the path. Cross the D42 road and continue straight on along Rue de Pierre Fiche to reach Thioles.

(28) At the junction, turn left onto Chemin de la Cote, then turn left onto Route de Dhuys and continue to the D42 at Croix des Laves.

(29) Turn right towards Simandre-sur-Suran. After the church, turn left towards the campsite, cross the Suran again over the stones and climb the steps to reach the cheese dairy.

Continue to the right, cross the bridge and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of food and drink, and be in good physical condition, as the hike is very long and features two significant climbs. Allow a full day.

Worth a visit

You’ll pass through several pretty little villages worth visiting, with Sélignac Abbey and the cheese dairy at the end of the route for cheese lovers.

A lovely, challenging hike to shake off the winter lethargy: over 9 hours covering more than 30 km (as we sometimes strayed off the trail and had to turn back)
Everything would have been fine had it not been for the difficulties getting to, and especially leaving, the Chartreuse de Selignac.
From W18 to W19 it was a real struggle, as it was so difficult to follow a virtually non-existent path that had been reclaimed by nature; we found ourselves wondering why we were there!! : we’ll do this hike again, following Marc Jeanson’s helpful advice from 3 September 2021 (take the path running parallel to the west of the GRP).

Please note that some sections are impassable or closed at this time of year. In other sections, the paths have been abandoned, even on the PR! For example, below the Chartreuse de Sélignac, the path is overgrown with nettles.
Many trees have fallen across the forest paths after the Chartreuse.
In short, a very interesting and beautiful route, but it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to follow exactly in places.
Generally speaking, in June, all the small paths become overgrown (brambles, grass, nettles, etc.).
And in the damp forests, there are plenty of ticks (4 or 5 spotted in time). Make sure you’re properly equipped

Please note that the hillside path leading to the abbey (waypoint 19), which is rarely used, is overgrown and has therefore almost disappeared. It is better to take the parallel path, which leads to waypoint 20.

Please note there is an error in the directions for getting to the Chartreuse de Solignac (19). There aren’t two stone walls!

The route is nice, but some of the paths are poorly maintained, if at all

You’re supposed to join the GR at the pylon at point number 2 and follow it until you leave Arnans, but the red and white markings are either non-existent or have been worn away! You must be very careful not to follow the blue and white markings, which branch off at the Racouse farm and rejoin the hiking route after Corveissiat (that said, the path is lovely and offers a beautiful view of, I think, the Crêt de la Neige and the Colomby de Gex).

In short, the hike is lovely, but the GR could do with a bit of a refresh when it comes to the markings!

GPS route problem

Personally, above the abbey, I took the wrong path... I turned onto a forest track and went down a steep slope through boxwood, on what looked like a hunting trail (I improvised to get back on track)
Interesting, as I love adventure – so a bit of a thrill going down through those box trees, as the path was steep and slippery... but I think of the more cautious folk who prefer risk-free hiking; they won’t be too pleased
but otherwise very good

The GPS track doesn’t match the descriptions in every detail

Can you tell us more?
As for the brambles, and more specifically the maintenance of the paths, we don’t have a solution. You’ll need to speak to the local associations or the Town Hall.

Hello,

The walk is lovely and offers some interesting views. However, the GPS route does not match the descriptions in every detail. I got lost several times and so my journey time was considerably longer than expected.

One point worth noting, however: the paths are poorly maintained or not maintained at all: brambles and nettles serve as the path, especially near the abbey, and some paths haven’t been mowed for a while, making them difficult to follow.

A good hike nonetheless, though it requires a good level of fitness.

Thanks for the route!
