Rosy Castle and Col des Justices

A lovely hike with beautiful scenery at the Col des Justices and the view of Rosy Castle. A pleasant hike despite its difficulty in certain sections.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park at the town hall in Nivigne et Suran or a little further on, in front of the municipal campsite, head towards the stop sign and turn left, heading south.

(1) Turn right at the intersection onto Rue du Revermont, then take the path on the right and follow it.

(2) Turn onto the path on the right and follow it to the road.

(3) At the end of the path, follow the road to the left and continue along it until you reach the stony path.

(4) Leave the road and take the gravel path on the right and follow it until you reach a new road.

(5) At the road, turn left and follow it.

(6) Leave the road and take the gravel path on the left. Follow it until the next fork.

(7) Follow the path downhill to reach a road.

(8) At the road, turn left onto the road that will take you to Rosy Castle.

(9) At the cross on the road leading to the castle gates, turn left onto a path. Follow this path, which forms a large loop, until you reach a junction.

(10) Continue along the rough path in front of you.

(11) At the three-way junction, follow the main path to arrive at Col des Justices.

(12) At the crossroads at the pass, continue along the path opposite, which leads to a wide track.

(13) Take the hairpin bend onto the main path which descends towards the Croix des Angoulures.

(14) Before the car park a little further on, take the path on the left which climbs steeply for a long distance. Watch your step.

(15)

(16) Take the path on the right, which is less travelled than the other path but just as difficult. It makes a small circular loop before joining the path you took on the way up.

(7) Turn right and follow the path back to the village of Nivigne et Suran and arrive at the car park (S/E).

Notes

I strongly recommend a good pair of hiking boots, a water bottle or flask, and, if possible, hiking poles, which could be useful.

This route can be done by mountain bike, but I strongly advise against it for beginners because of the particularly difficult passages at points (14) and (16).

Worth a visit

(9) At Rosy Castle, which I did not visit, you can see the small chapel near the castle entrance, as well as various abandoned houses.

Between points 14 and 15, the path, barely visible, is overgrown with brambles. Avoid this section unless you enjoy thorns.

A pleasant and varied hike.
In our opinion, it is overrated: only moderately difficult apart from the steep climb after point 14.
There are few markings, but if you pay attention and use the map, there's no problem.

Kind regards.

Hike done on 17/06/2022, a very, very hot day. Perhaps best done before the vegetation grows, as the paths are very narrow and feel stifling. But it was still good, and with the Visorando app we were able to follow the route perfectly. Thank you.

A pleasant hike, without any particular difficulties. The route along the ridges is nice for the unobstructed views, but nothing exceptional. Nevertheless, we recommend it. Thank you for this route. Near Simandre sur Suran, we saw three deer in a field on our way to Chavanne. It's always nice to see the local wildlife before the hunters exterminate everything.

Hello Mr Piroux,

I agree with you, the route was found on a GPX website that only gives the route. I did the entire route, and it wasn't easy to note everything down to help you on this hike. I had to rack my brains to make it understandable, and with the comments from a moderator, I had to go back to it twice.

With the map, it's possible to stay on the route. Did you have any difficulties?

This route is designed for mountain biking.

I look forward to hearing from you, and why not go hiking together with other hikers?

Best regards

A very beautiful hike, the only downside I could mention is that it is not signposted at all. For people who are completely unfamiliar with the area, it is impossible for them to find their way around.
We knew the area a little, so we were able to follow the map.
