Tête Ronde from La Penne-sur-Huveaune via La Millière

A lovely, short but fairly challenging hike, featuring technical sections over rocky terrain and some lovely single tracks. At the highest point, La Tête Ronde, there are views of the Marseille region, Sainte-Beaume, La Millière and Aubagne.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park, 55 Allée des Jacinthes 13821 in La Penne-sur-Huveaune, look for the forest gate on path CQ 122. Take this path. Just before reaching the top of the hill, you will come to a path on the right; take this path. You will come to another path on the right; stay on the main path until you reach a junction. Continue along the main path. At the fork on the right, stay on the main path (straight ahead) to reach a junction.

(1) Take CQ 231 on the left as you climb. Pass a path on the left and continue on the main path on the right.

(2) At the junction with a small path on the left, barely visible and marked by a wooden signpost, follow the path straight ahead towards the summit of La Candolle, along a lovely little single track. Then follow the markings which indicate a left turn. Stay on the main path, heading straight up.

(3) When you reach the fork at the top, take the path climbing up to the left, heading south. A few metres further on, take the small junction branching off to the right. It climbs slightly less steeply than the one on the left, and is still marked in yellow and red. You’ll arrive facing the Ravine, and take the path on the left marked in yellow and red, down a somewhat steep descent over the rocks.

(4) Take the path on the right, following the yellow markings, then turn right again. Follow it carefully. When you reach the blocked path, follow the main path which turns left, still marked in yellow. This path winds in hairpin bends.

(5) At the junction, take the path on the right as it descends.

(6) At the end of the path, there is a car park opposite. Continue left onto the path that climbs and is marked in sky blue. It passes alongside a green fence. At the gate, the path branches off to the left and climbs. The sky-blue marked path follows the route on the map exactly: it climbs in hairpin bends

(7) You will reach the summit of Tête Ronde, which rises to 432 metres. This is the highest point of the walk, offering views of Marseille, Aubagne, La Milière and beyond. Enjoy the view and return via the same path to the car park, so as not to cross or encroach upon the boundaries of the Carpiagne military base (S/E).
