The walk begins by accessing the Parc de la Ville via the footbridge before climbing up to the Parc Animalier.
The route then heads towards the track of the funicular railway that transported iron ore 13 km from Ottange (France) to the steelworks in Differdange. This funicular railway operated from 1906 until the 1980s.
A few cable lengths further on, the walk takes hikers to the Ellergronn Nature Reserve, returns to the funicular line and heads towards the Rosati House along a wide forest path.
After crossing the national road, the route enters the Lalléngerbierg Brucherbierg Nature Reserve, where it passes through former open-cast mines: this is the most informative and visually striking part of the walk in terms of iron extraction.
The walk then makes a beautiful loop through the forest around the Hasselerbierg on the heights of Schifflange before reaching Kayl through the countryside.
This magnificent walk takes you on a journey of discovery through the former mining sites operated by the A.R.B.E.D between Esch-sur-Alzette, Schifflange and Kayl. It is offered by the CFL (Luxembourg's railway company) as part of its Hike & Rail range of hiking trails from station to station and has been slightly modified by us at the start and finish.

Notes
Please note: this is a very brief description of the route, given its length, and therefore does not offer the same guarantees as the walks usually published on Visorando.
Please note: this walk is not a loop. The easiest way to return to the starting point (from the end point) is by bus (free): there are four buses running between Duddelange and Esch-sur-Alzette (every 15 minutes on weekdays, once an hour on Sundays and public holidays). The Esch-Gare bus stop is at the starting point. The Kayl-Post bus stop is next to the car park at the end of the walk. The most difficult part will probably be finding a car park that is accessible (free of charge) for the day. Kayl-Post is a paid car park with a maximum stay of 2 hours from Monday to Friday, but it is free with no time limit on Saturdays and Sundays. On the Esch-sur-Alzette side, the best place is probably the free car park at the end of Rue du Stade (1.1 km into the walk).
