Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the Montgaillard water tower.

(S/E) Head north-west towards Jourdan. Reach the crossroads leading to this farm.

(1) Leave the road and follow the grassy track – which is very muddy in wet weather – as it winds more or less along the hillside until it joins a tarmac road at the ruins of the Petite Boire farm. Continue on to reach the hamlet of Lestrade.

(2) Turn right onto the track that climbs opposite the houses, head towards the hamlet of Cantinolle, and reach the vicinity of the hamlet of Les Caubets.

(3) Keep to this north-easterly path, crossing the road linking Cousteau to Gaillac. Carry on straight ahead, keeping the road on your left, and follow the boundary wall of Gache Castle until you reach the main gate.

(4) Follow the castle wall, turning right at the entrance to the castle, and continue along this small road which leads to a crossroads at the edge of a small wood.

(5) Take the road on the right, signposted as a dead end. The road then turns into a track.

(6) Take care here: make sure you follow the track, not the edge of the vineyard, to reach the ford across the Fongrane stream. Continue along this track until you reach the tarmac road.

(7) Turn right onto it to reach the village and the car park at the water tower (S/E).

A lovely, easy walk with varied scenery and a little something for everyone in the village of Montgaillard – the church and the ruins of the castle.

A very pleasant route to walk in dry weather. The steep section towards the end of the route can be quite tricky to grip in wet conditions.
You can do the route in the opposite direction... it makes the climb easier to manage.

Having made a huge effort not to use my IGN25 Blue Series map, we appreciated how easy Visorando was to use and the convenience it offered.
We went for a walk in lovely weather. The path was wide and well-maintained. The scenery was varied. Autumn colours ranging from yellow to orange. The perfect length for an afternoon.
In the village of Buzet, the Château de Gaches and its large wooded park.
In Montgaillard, the Pyrenees mountain range was clearly visible. An unexpected sight!
In Xaintrailles, the château (private, but you can enter the grounds).
In short, we highly recommend it!

The walk is really lovely at this time of year. There’s always a shaded stretch in the heart of a small wood. I found myself thinking about Bilbo the Hobbit for a few minutes.
You have a choice during the walk: follow the signposted route or extend it by two or three kilometres.
I’ll do it again this autumn to enjoy the autumn colours.
