Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the town hall in Saint-Cierge-sous-le-Cheylard.

(S/E) Continue up through the village, passing the inn. You’ll reach a Y-shaped junction.

(1) Turn left, down the narrow lane with a panoramic terrace. Follow the track to the left, passing under the reservoir, then veer right to reach a crossroads of paths at the La Montée signpost.

(2) Turn left and follow the signs for Saint-Jean-Roure. Climb through the woods and join a wider track.

(3) Take this to the left and continue until you reach the houses of La Grangette at the end of the track.

(4) Take the path down to the left a little further down and turn left onto the path marked with a White Cross and a Yellow Cross to cross the Ruisseau de Ranc Courbier further down. On the flat section to the right, you’ll reach the ruins at the hamlet of Le Poux.

(5) Continue on and join a wider track. You will then reach a multi-way junction at the La Farge signpost.

(6) From here, follow the signs for Saint-Cierge, walk past the hamlet of La Farge and, at the next crossroads, keep right to reach another crossroads immediately afterwards.

(7) Take the track on the right; at the next hairpin bend, cross the Ruisseau de Saint-Jean-Roure. Take the track opposite and walk through the woods to reach the road leading to the hamlet of Les Sagnolles.

(8) Keep straight on this road, cross the hamlet of Les Sagnolles and pass close to the hamlet of Chasalet before reaching the junction of a path above the houses of La Grande Moula.

(9) Continue along the track to the right which descends into the forest. Pass a ruin and follow the path downwards. Cross the Ruisseau de la Grande Moula to arrive immediately afterwards at the houses of Grande Moula.

(10) Head down to reach the La Montée signpost, at the junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Carry on opposite, retracing your steps in the opposite direction to return to the car park at the town hall in Saint-Cierge-sous-le-Cheylard (S/E).

Notes

Saint-Cierge-sous-le-Cheylard is situated just above the village of Le Cheylard, where you’ll find all the amenities you need.
Saint-Cierge-sous-le-Cheylard, as it lies beneath the rock of the same name, but well above the town of Le Cheylard.

Worth a visit

Take the time to take some photos; the view of the Boutières mountain range is quite unique on this side of the valley.

A pleasant walk. The climb at the start is quite steep. It’s easy to follow the route description and the route on the map.

A small problem after the barn: the path that branched off to the left towards Le Poux was marked with a cross. We took it anyway without any incident. Perhaps the route has been changed?
Otherwise, it was a lovely walk with a few sections on the road.

High above Le Cheylard, this woodland walk begins with a fairly strenuous climb to warm up.
It’s easy to follow the route on the app, and there are occasional yellow and white markings, which I find a bit unconventional.
At point No. 5, you can take a detour to ‘Ranc Courbier’, to the left of the trail, to enjoy a view of the valley and stop for a picnic.
The locals in the hamlets are very welcoming and it’s lovely to stop and chat with them to share in their beautiful countryside.
As the lake had just been drained, we were unable to appreciate its beauty.
Enjoy the hike
