Description of the walk

Park at Col du Vaset (D204). :

(S/E) Walk past the hunters’ hut, then turn left about a hundred metres further on, following the white and yellowPR® markings. Walk for about 400 m.

(1) Leave thePR® markings and take the small path through the Douglas firs and then the oak trees on the right.
You will come to a track known as the “chemin de l’eau”, which you follow to the left.

(2) Leave the track and follow the small path on the right down to the water reservoir.

(3) Walk past it and follow the track downhill. At the hairpin bend, turn left, walk past the Charreyre house (mountain bikers, proceed at walking pace) then join the D264 at the hamlet of Aurance. Follow it to your left until you reach a small shed on the right by the roadside.

(4) Take the small path opposite. Be careful: the small bridge over the stream is slippery and narrow. Continue north-east until you come out onto a small tarmac road. Follow this road to the left to reach the centre of the village of Saint-Michel-d’Aurance (church).

(5) Turn left between the houses, keep left to pass in front of the town hall and continue on the D264A to the Pialon crossroads.

(6) Turn right to pass in front of the house, then cross carefully to join the track opposite. Keep right at the junction and continue to thePR® signpost “Source Banban”.

(7) At this signpost, take the track on the left which goes uphill.

(8) At this point, do not follow the white and yellowPR® markings but take the path opposite, which descends slightly then climbs until you rejoin the “chemin de l’eau” track.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to the Col du Vaset car park (S/E).

A lovely walk, with a very detailed guide, but there’s a mistake in stage 4.

After Maison Charreyre, we assumed we were supposed to turn right onto the B-road to reach the wooden hut. This road does indeed lead to Saint Michel d’Aurance. Following the signposts, we turned left and couldn’t find this road.

The signposting is excellent, but as the path isn’t used very often, it’s sometimes hard to see and overgrown with brambles and nettles! At point 2, a tiny cairn helps you find the path… A resident of Saint Michel d’Aurance helped us to ‘clear’ the trail… For a mid-afternoon in July, the numerous stretches through the forest were very welcome!

A short, unpretentious walk that’s perfect for stretching your legs. Although the route runs almost entirely through woodland, the canopy between points 3 and 6 isn’t always dense enough for a walk in the height of summer. Well done to the organisations that have reopened these country lanes; they now need to be used enough to ensure they don’t disappear again: the brambles have already taken over, particularly between points 3 and 4 (definitely not a walk to do in shorts!!!)
As soon as you leave the PR markings, the route is clearly marked with blue raindrops (i.e. between points 1 and 5 and after point 8).
Keep an eye out at point 2 to find the small path that branches off to the right.

A lovely little walk – perfect when you don’t have much time.
Mostly through woodland => perfect when it’s hot.
On your way back, don’t hesitate to pop into the Château de la Chèze as you head down towards Le Cheylard: lovely views + a magnificent park (two spectacular giant sequoias and a beautiful cedar).
Thanks for the route!

A lovely, easy walk through the woods.
Take care at point 2 – don’t miss the little path on the right (we missed it but found it by retracing our steps).
At point 8, don’t take the path that goes uphill, even if it looks inviting, and continue along the hillside on a contour line.
Thanks for this route.
