The walk starts at the foot of the church in Saint-Jean-Roure.
(S/E) At the junction by the large wayside cross, near the church, follow the local signposts towards Saint-Cierge / Les Signolles / Vierne.
Then turn right onto the Sentier des Auches. Head down the path towards the stream, following a bend to the left.
(1) After the stream, turn right onto the less steep path. Walk alongside the stream below on your right until you reach the next junction.
(2) Turn left onto the stony path that climbs. Continue along this path until you come to a small tarmac road.
(3) Turn immediately right onto the path leading downhill (follow the Blue Cross markings).
Follow the path downwards. This path is rather overgrown; there may be some low-hanging branches and tall grass in places, so please be careful and keep a low profile so as not to disturb the local wildlife.
You’ll come to a better-maintained path from which you can hear a river below.
(4) Turn left onto this path. Continue until you reach a Fork in the road between a private track and a hiking trail; take the one furthest to the right and head towards the hamlet of La Grangette. Carry on, passing through the bottom of the valley and round a hairpin bend, until you reach a junction.
(5) Turn right (straight ahead) onto the signposted path and descend via a series of hairpin bends through the woods.
At this point, it is advisable to follow the hiking markings to avoid tricky sections and not necessarily to follow the mountain bike tracks which head straight on.
(6) At the bottom, at the junction, veer to the right.
(7) About a hundred metres further on, turn left. Continue straight on along the path, which becomes a tarmac road. Enjoy the view over the Eyrieux valley.
(8) At the end of the street, turn left to head away from the village of Saint-Cierge-sous-le-Cheylard. Before the ‘Village Exit’ sign, take care not to miss the path leading down to the right (follow the existing markings).
Continue straight on along the path to the hamlet of Les Nots.
(9) Please note: at this point, the path is well hidden; do not go back up to the tarmac road but turn right at the small covered garage, between the last two houses on the right in the hamlet.
(10) When you reach a tarmac road, turn right onto it and follow it for about 160 metres.
(11) At the next house, in the hamlet of Vareilles, turn left onto the signposted path.
(12) Continue straight on until you come to an abandoned house on your right. Then take the first right and follow the existing signposts. Do not continue straight on; there should be a signpost with a cross at this point.
Carry on along the Chemin de la Mure and cross the stream.
(13) At the next junction, take the path going uphill to the left and carry on straight ahead.
You’ll reach a tarmac road; follow it to the left. The easiest route to follow is to carry on straight ahead along the tarmac road to the hamlet of La Coste.
(14) In the hamlet, walk past the houses and carry on straight ahead. Cross the stream and continue along the path leading uphill. After the hamlet of Pouzat, carry on uphill along the wide path.
(15) At the junction where the track meets a road, turn left onto the road and follow it to La Grange de Sagne (a house on the right-hand side of the road).
(16) Then turn left onto the track. Carry on straight ahead and do not take the track on the left at the Fork in the road. Then turn slightly left after crossing the stream. The stream will now be on your left. Carry on straight ahead and return to the Church of Saint-Jean-Roure (S/E).
