On the ridges around Bergueneuse

More than 22 km of trails for a nature trail with some nice climbs and descents. Sharpen your calves!
Beautiful views, woods and, if you're lucky, a few wild animals. At least, the ones that the hunters don't slaughter, as we recently freed two roe deer caught in snares (fox traps, but any animal can get caught there, and it's legal!).

Description of the walk

Start: Fontaine-lès-Boulans, small car park on the D94, near the church.

(S/E) Head towards the church and turn right onto the D93 towards Prédefin. A hundred metres further on, turn left onto a beautiful path (signposted with hiking arrows).

(1) At the very end, take the path on the right and climb Mont Aubert (path a little damaged at the end of January 2017, in its lower part) to reach the D93. Follow it for about fifty metres on the left.

(2) Take the track on the left. After 300m, turn right to reach a crossroads (calvary hidden in the trees on the left).

(3) Go straight ahead and 100m further on, take the right-hand path. At the next T-junction, join the GRP® du Ternois (yellow and red markings). Follow it to the left. At the crossroads with a small road, take the track opposite. This path may disappear under the ploughed land shortly before reaching a small road. Aim for the grove on the right (correct in early March 2023, but watch out for thawing!). Cross the small road to take the path opposite (a little damaged, but often crossed by deer). Arrive at a wide crossroads (recent wind turbine). Take the wide track opposite to reach a small road.

(4) Follow it to the left for about 400m, then take the second track on the left, still following the GRP® (signposted with arrows, which seems to have disappeared in October 2022, but there is a "décharge interdite" sign). Ignore a wide track on the right and continue straight ahead on a grassy path. Turn right for the 1st time, then left for the 2nd time to reach a small road.

(5) Continue straight ahead to reach the D71, which you follow on the left to the Équirre church. At the church, turn right onto the grassy square and reach a small road which you follow uphill to the right.

(6) At the T-junction, turn left and drive down to the houses. Take the street on your right (Rue de l'Argilière) to join the D71 (calvary).

(7) Follow it to the right as far as the Bergueneuse church. Turn left to reach a crossroads.

(8) Take the small street on the left (Rue de Thérouanne). It soon becomes a good uphill path. 500m further on, leave a path on the right and continue for another 100m.

(9) Turn right at right-angles (signposted) and go down to a small road. Cross the road and take the path opposite. Towards the end of the path, there's a passage which can be very tricky, and you often have to go over the field fence (it's quite easy!). Reach a small road which you follow to the right until you reach the D94.

(10) Turn left towards the church and immediately right into Rue du Curé (you can also start your walk here: large car park). You'll come to the Ruisseau du Faux (stream), which you follow to the left as far as the D92E1. Follow it a few hundred metres to the right, then turn right (still on the GRP®) to cross the Faux stream again. A fine climb through undergrowth leads to the D71. Cross the road to take the path opposite, still uphill. Turn left at the 1st T, then right at the 2nd T to reach a crossroads.

(11) Leave the GRP® and turn left onto the D71. Cross the road, take the path opposite and continue straight ahead. 2.5km further on, you'll see a wind turbine holding out its blades. Once you've reached the wind turbine (there's a very bad road ahead), continue straight ahead to reach a T-junction.

(12) Turn left. 200m further on, at the calvary, go left again (small passage through undergrowth). At the end of the wood, turn left with GRP® (signposted). The beautiful path follows along the wood and descends into Quévaussart. After the arboretum, reach the D92E and follow it to the left for 200m.

(13) Just after the Quévaussart farm, take the track on the right (it looks like you're entering the farm, and the signpost is not very visible). Wade a little, then the path rises and veers left to reach a crossroads (not visible on the map).

(14) Go right towards a signpost, ignoring a 1st right, then a 2nd left. Continue straight on, slightly uphill, before descending to Fontaine-lès-Boulans. A fine descent with ruts and flint. Be careful not to slip! Reach the D93 and follow it to the left until you reach the D94.

The church and starting point are on the right (S/E).

A beautiful, bucolic route, with lots of paths, to be recommended in dry weather. Ideal with a dog too. No big changes in altitude, the 24km are very easy. Delighted to have discovered this area

Superb tour that we completed in very good conditions (very dry paths), just lacking a bit of sunshine! The paths are varied due to the relief and landscapes they cross. Sometimes in the valleys, sometimes on the plateau, up and down, gently. You pass through a few villages. We saw plenty of roe deer, hares and pheasants.
However, with the Visorando app on our phone, we had 25.8 km and more ascent: 690 m .
A route to be recommended to all good hikers (it's long). It took us 6 hours, with a short sandwich break.
Thank you and well done to Joorange for these magnificent trails.

We saw some roe deer at the end of the tour, on the descent after the wind turbine.
We had a picnic at the auberge des vertes collines, where we were given a very warm and friendly welcome despite the mud on our shoes.

It's true that there must have been some tricky sections!

Which way did you come across the roe deer? I haven't seen any in this area for a while!

Does the café accept packed lunches? I thought it was an inn.

Sincerely

Paths (or sometimes just paths in open fields) are extremely muddy in winter, so sticks are essential ...
Fairly monotonous route in the 1st part, more interesting at the end, and we came across some roe deer ...
Lunch stop at a café in Heuchin (open on Sundays) ... good in winter when it's raining.

Very nice walk
Not a lot of road, very good for my dog who wasn't on a lead
Just have to be a bit careful on the last descent with the rocks.

A beautiful, hilly walk in the Ternois region. We did this walk in cold weather, and the ground was frozen. In wet weather, some sections must be muddy. The use of farm machinery, and quad bikes in particular, spoils the beauty of these grassy paths. You pass through some beautiful villages, with pretty churches and castles. The route is well described in the information sheet. It follows other sections of signposted routes.
