Rocher de Cheylard - from Ray-Pic to the Col d'Aizac

The first stage of this two-day loop around the Rocher de Cheylard takes you from the edge of the Ray-Pic waterfall to Aizac, a small village in the Cévennes Ardéchoises, perched on a pass between Volane and Besorgues.

Beech forests, broom-covered moors, chestnut trees, Roman roads, crystal-clear streams, passes with breathtaking views... you will walk from the Ardèche plateau to the lower Ardèche.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le Rocher de Cheylard, natural viewpoint

Description of the walk

Reach the village of Péreyres on the D215 and park a little further up at the Ray-Pic waterfall car park.

(S) Follow this departmental road for a few metres and at the first bend, take the path down to the right which joins the same road further down, at the bridge over the Bourges, and follow this road for about 600 metres.

(1) Shortly after a left-hand bend, immediately after passing a property entrance and a small bridge, take the steeply ascending path on the right (not very visible). The markings are very basic (yellow and red) on this section: be careful not to lose the trail in the beech forest.

(2) When you leave the forest, join a track and follow it to the left for 1 km. You are now on the GRP® Tour de la Montagne Ardéchoise.

(3) At this point, leave the GRP® and head south on a wide, slightly downhill track (not marked) until you reach a path climbing up the valley, marked in yellow.

(4) Follow it to the right until it joins the GR®73 (more often referred to as GR®7 on the signs) at Pra Pouzol.

(5) Pass the two hiking posts (north and south) and continue on the GR®7, first south-west then due west. You are now on the Atlantic/Mediterranean watershed. When you reach a small road, turn left and follow it for 500 m.

(6) Leave the road and take a path heading south, slightly uphill, which soon begins the long descent towards Burzet. At a small road (hiking signpost "La Brousse"), leave the GR® trail on your right and descend to the left, heading south on the old Roman road. The route is well marked here. Cross the small road descending towards Burzet several times to join the GRP® trail of the Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche, marked in yellow and red, further down.

(7) Descend towards the village and come out onto Rue de l'Église. Follow it to the bridge.

(8) Cross the bridge over the river and take the first small road on the left.

(9) Leave the valley and the riverbank and climb up to the right onto the GRP®, which is well signposted (hiking signpost "le Château") to reach the hamlet of Le Villard.

(10) Cross the D254 and follow the path opposite, which will take you to the Col de Moucheyre.

(11) Continue along the road, heading east, for a few steps, then descend the path on the right between the chestnut trees. Cross the hamlet of Moucheyres and arrive at the D243, which you should follow to the right for 20 metres.

(12) Unmarked section: climb the track on the right. Ignore two secondary tracks on the right and stay on the main track, which climbs gently. Cross a pretty meadow and arrive at an old farm called "Le Chaumeil".

(13) The track turns into a road. Follow it uphill, then down a long descent to rejoin the GRP® Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche.

(14) At the entrance to the hamlet of Haute Blachère, leave the road and take the track on the left heading north. Immediately, leave theGRP® heading north and take the path on the right, marked in yellow. Cross the hamlet of Blachère (above or below the houses... there are several possibilities). Cross the D343 and follow the path that continues downhill along a pine forest. Arrive at the hamlet of Moulin la Coste on the D243. Follow it to the right, cross a bridge and rejoin the GRP® Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche, which you will follow to Aizac.

(15) Leave the road (hiking signpost "Moulin Lacoste") and take a small path downhill to the left, cross the Besorgues river at an old silk factory, and continue until you find the start of the path climbing up to Aizac.

(16) Climb up to the right for 1 km. You will come to a road; take it to the left for 100 m until you reach the Col d'Aizac (E).

Superb! A wide variety of landscapes that are very representative of the region. Passes through beautiful villages and hamlets. Very little tarmac. Be careful, some slopes are really steep and can be tricky in wet weather.
