Description of the walk

The parking spot is near the village of Chauzeix on a small road off the D121 road east of the village of Chauzeix, which serves two houses and continues as a farm track. Parking is available on the side of this small road in the grass at the bend below the last house, on both sides of the small road (see GPS coordinates).

(S/E) Leave the parking area by walking up towards the last house (the start of the circuit is on theGR®46). The small road gives way to a farm track as soon as you pass the last house.
Turn left onto the farm track (unmarked) which joins the D121 road after about 100 metres.
Turn right and take the D121 road with caution (fairly narrow road with reduced visibility).
The route now follows theGR®440orGRP® de Monédières.

(1) Shortly after a wide left-hand bend, take the farm track on the left, which climbs slightly. This track leads to the hamlet of Branceau. Continue straight ahead on this farm track, which becomes a forest track as it enters the forest.
Leave the path serving the Branceau locality on your right.

(2) At a hairpin bend, take the level path on the right which goes around the Puy de Chauzeix. The path descends slightly before turning left and climbing steadily towards the top of the Cirque de Freysselines. Continue straight ahead on this marked path (GR® 440).

(3) After crossing a small valley with a stream that is tapped for the village of Freysselines below, leave a dead-end path on your left. The path now goes around the Suc au May.
The slope of the path increases and the path climbs in a hairpin bend towards a crossroads near the summit. The path eventually joins a small road (which serves as theGR®440after the summit of the Knoll).
Turn left onto this small road, which immediately joins the D128E road.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left onto the D128E, which continues uphill after a short flat section.

(5) Turn right onto the small road closed by a barrier that leads to the summit of Suc au May. Continue to the summit where you will find an orientation table.

(6) Enjoy the splendid panorama from the orientation table at Suc au May, at an altitude of 908 metres, over the entire region (beautiful views of Freysselines, the Étang de Ganezande and the surrounding area) and, in good weather, the volcanic chains of the Monts du Cantal, Mont Dore and Puys d'Auvergne.
Descend from the Suc au May, initially following the same route.
Then take a path on the right just before the barrier that closes this small road. From this point onwards, there are no more signposts. The path quickly joins a small road.

(7) At this point, turn right and continue along a forest path that goes around the summit of the Suc au May.
The path leads to a small pass between the Suc au May and the Puy de Chauzeix. Continue along the path after crossing this small pass and begin the descent below the summit of the Puy de Chauzeix, then down its slopes.
Continue along this path until you reach a forest road.

(8) Turn left onto the forest road and follow it to the crossroads at a hairpin bend.

(2) From there, return to the starting point by following the same route you took on the way there (the path is marked asGR®440-GRP® des Monédières).

As a reminder, drive carefully along the D121 road for seven to eight hundred metres until you reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Monédières Massif
The Monédières massif is a granite formation that is part of the Massif Central and is located south-west of the Millevaches plateau.
Rising over 300 metres above the Corrèze part of the Limousin plateau to the west, the Monédières are one of the most striking features of the Limousin mountains, offering a striking contrast with their sudden appearance and views stretching for dozens of kilometres to the west. This break is reinforced and caused by the geological differences between the massif (granite) and the plateau (gneiss).
Covering a total area of approximately 60 km2, it is located between the municipalities of:
Treignac, Affieux, Veix and Lestards to the north;
Pradines, Grandsaigne and Saint-Yrieix-le-Déjalat to the east;
Saint-Augustin, Chaumeil and Sarran to the south;
Madranges to the west.
It is separated from the Limousin plateau to the west by the Vimbelle and Madrange rivers, and from the Millevaches plateau to the east by the Corrèze and Corrèze de Pradines rivers.
Its rounded peaks rise 150 to 300 metres above the surrounding valleys:
- the Puy de Monédière, the highest point at 919 metres,
- the Suc au May, 908 metres, from where you can see the entire Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park (Chaîne des Puys, Monts Dore, Cézallier, the Monts du Cantal) and the rest of the Millevaches Regional Nature Park in Limousin (Mont Gargan, Mont Bessou), where there is an orientation table;
- the Puy de Chauzeix, 893 metres;
- the Peuch Géant, 856 metres
- puy Charrin, 869 metres
- puy d'Orliac, 705 metres.

Suc au May
Located at an altitude of 908 metres, the Suc au May orientation table offers a magnificent panorama of the Limousin Mountains and the Millevaches plateau. The Monédières massif forms a series of domes and gentle depressions with flat bottoms. In good weather, you can admire the relief of the Auvergne: the Dôme, Dore and Cantal mountains.
The word Monédières means "mountains of the day" and hints at the play of light that can be seen here. However, the massif has suffered three major fires (the first was started by Julius Caesar to eliminate the powerful local druids, the second by the proconsuls (for the same reason) and the third was ordered by Louis de Pompadour, Baron of Treignac, during the Wars of Religion).
The Bol d'Or des Monédières cycle race, launched by accordionist Jean Ségurel, takes place in the massif.
The massif is home to a Natura 2000 classified area, the Landes des Monédières.

Chaumeil
Chaumeil is located in the heart of the Monédières massif. Near the village is the Maison des Monédières, which offers exhibitions and activities. The Corrèze River flows through the area.
The town hall houses an exhibition dedicated to the life and work of accordionist Jean Ségurel, who was born in this village.
Its name evokes the old thatched roofs. In reality, Chaumeil is a word derived from the old Occitan "calm", in its Limousin form "chalm", which means moorland, bare hill, desert plateau. The village of Chaumeil overlooks the Douyge valley.

The Church of Saint-Jacques le Majeur and Saint-Laurent
A superb porch, with a semi-circular arch supported by two angels with phylacteries, crowns a magnificent Gothic doorway. Several statues, including two polychrome stone Virgins, classified as historical monuments and dating from the late Middle Ages, are on display in the building, as well as a 17th-century altarpiece in carved, painted and silver-plated wood.

Chaumeil, home of the accordion
Chaumeil is unique in that it is the birthplace of many accordionists, including Jean Segurel. You can visit his museum on the ground floor of the Maison de Pays des Monédières (free admission)

Jean Ségurel (born 13 October 1908 in Chaumeil, Corrèze, died in the same place on 29 December 1978) was one of the most famous and popular accordionists, composers and conductors. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour by General de Gaulle in 1968. A ten-time millionaire record seller, he wrote over six hundred songs, the most famous of which was created in 1936, Bruyères Corréziennes, inspired by Ségurel's lyricist Jean Leymarie and the particularly beautiful and flowery heather on the slopes of the Monédières. This song travelled around the world and he recorded six different versions on record throughout his career. The 1945 version, recorded on the Odéon label, sold over 600,000 copies, a record at the time.
The son of Corrèze farmers who had opened a café-inn in Chaumeil to supplement their meagre income, Jean-Baptiste Ségurel, affectionately known as "Baptistou", showed an aptitude for music from a very young age, even making his own violin. But his greatest joy came when his father gave him twenty francs to buy a real one in Tulle. He was then able to accompany his father to dance for the locals at balls and fairs in the region. The young "Baptistou" discovered a musical instrument that was a veritable orchestra in its own right: the accordion. On his return from military service in 1929, having decided to become an accordionist, Jean Ségurel was noticed by the three Maugein brothers.
He began his career as a musician by playing at dances in Corrèze on fair days, then at weddings, but most often alone, with a bass drum at his feet. In the 1930s, with two friends who were schoolteachers, Jean Leymarie and Roger Faure, he formed a small group that quickly became successful: Les Troubadours Corréziens. Like many people from the Auvergne region, many Corréziens had moved to Paris in the 1920s. Among them were Gervais and Antonine Goursolas, originally from Saint-Augustin, who founded the folk group Les chanteurs et Danseurs Limousins de Paris. They introduced Jean Ségurel to Martin Cayla, then a pioneer of Massif Central folklore in the Paris region, who had founded his own record label, Le Soleil.
He is also known for creating the famous Bol d'or des Monédières cycle race in 1952.

A lovely walk, but it is easy to get lost if you follow the GR trail. Superb views from the summit of Suc-au-May.

A bit of tarmac at the start and halfway through, lots of stones on part of the circuit and no signposting on part of the circuit, but superb views from the top of the Knoll and beautiful pine forest. Best done when it's not too hot or very early in the morning as there is no shade on some sections.

Given the heatwave, we set off directly from the car park at Le Knoll without going via Chauzeix. There were a few minor issues with the signposting, so we followed the app at one point. Superb panoramic view from the orientation table.

We left very early (6:45 a.m.) from point A this morning to try to avoid the predicted heat. It took us 3 hours and 10 minutes in total, including several photo stops and a break at the summit, of course.
No difficulties.
A bit of tarmac at the start, but we quickly reached the forest. Huge, magnificent pine trees, a forest of heather and calunes.
At the summit (which can be reached by car), there were a few metres on the road, but by following the end of the "rando des millevache" app, we could have finished without hitting the road. This may need to be changed on the app.
We got back around 10 a.m., which was perfect. We only got hot during the last 10 minutes because everything else was in the shade. Except for the summit, but we got there early enough.
So, it's great for an early workout on a day that promises to be hot and humid.
Thanks for this beautiful route.

The best time to visit this route is when the heather is in bloom.
An interesting walk. Not fabulous, though

hello,
the weather was beautiful and sunny on 08/10/2023 (28°C!): the course was not shaded enough when the sun was out, especially between D & 2, and there were too many stones....
Very pretty between the knoll and 4, but is that enough?
no, in my opinion, which is a shame.
completed in 2½ hours without pushing myself.

The hike begins with a long climb of about 4 km to the knoll of Suc-au-May, which offers a superb view from the top. A beautiful walk through coniferous woods. I recommend this hike.

A very beautiful hike. We can't comment on the signposting, as we are used to following the GPS route, which is excellent.
A beautiful climb from the village of Chauzeix, with beautiful views. We tried a variation, taking the walk in the opposite direction and arriving at the orientation table, avoiding the car park. As a result, we arrived at the knoll at Le May as soon as we left the woods. It was very pretty and a change from the usual route. On the other hand... it's steep! You need to be fairly fit (or take your time ). We did the circuit in 1 hour 45 minutes in beautiful weather with superb autumn colours.

Thank you for this hike. This circuit climbs from the hamlet of Chauzeix to Suc au May via a southern slope, then descends via a more shaded slope. The descent through the pine forest is not signposted, and there are several possible paths, so a GPS is useful. At the top of Suc au May, there is a large car park accessible to motorhomes.
The GR46 passes through Chauzeix and the GR440 passes through Suc au May. The two GR trails meet in the hamlet of Beyssac, offering the possibility of a loop (approximately 20 km, not tested).

In the end, we changed our plans because we first went down the GR46 to see the Ganezande pond. Then we walked along the road to Freysselines to see the Limousin cows and their stables. We then took the GR440 to climb up to Suc au May and returned via this GR to our starting point in Chauzeix.
It's a really different route, but I'm not sure how to incorporate it into the existing routes.
A very beautiful walk.
