Steinernehiesel–Haberacker–Ochsenstein

From the valley floor up to the summits, passing the forest lodges at Schaeferplatz and Haberacker, the medieval Ochsenstein Castle and the sandstone rock formations of the Schlossberg and Krappenfels.
A lovely walk with a bit of elevation gain and a few kilometres to ensure you have a pleasant day out.

Description of the walk

Coming from Saverne, take the D132 towards Lutzelbourg and Stambach. After about 4 km, at the Stambach sign, take the forest road that branches off diagonally to the left in front of you and cross the railway line. There is a sign for the Route des Châteaux.
After the railway line, pass the water treatment plant and carry on straight ahead. After about 1.5 km, you’ll come to a small square with a little stone cottage. That’s the place!
Park next to this little stone cottage.

(S/E) Take the path heading downstream, towards the north, marked with a red saltire and a blue-white-blue Blue Rectangle. After about a hundred metres, turn eastwards and start climbing. You’ll come to a T-junction.

(1) Turn right at a right angle onto the unmarked forest track. Follow it due south. This is a well-cleared and passable forest track used for timber hauling. Stay on this ascending track until you reach the junction with the Chemin Forestier du Président.

(2) Turn right onto this path and follow the Blue Cross signposting. You’ll reach the Schaeferplatz Forest House.

(3) Follow the tarmac road which passes a clearing and a picnic area. After this area, a path starts on the right. Begin the ascent, following the red-white-red Red Rectangle markings, to reach the Rocher du Hibou.

(4) Carry on and begin a winding descent until you reach the tarmac road and a car park.

(5) Take the path running parallel to the road towards the south-west, signposted with a Red Ring and a Red Rectangle, to reach the junction of the Billebaum and Haberacker paths.

(6) Cross the road and continue along the path running parallel to the road, now signposted with a Yellow Triangle, to reach the Haberacker forest houses.

(7) Walk past them and turn right, then left at the next junction. Continue through the forest, heading due north, and follow the Blue Rectangle markings and the sign depicting arrow slits, which mark the Chemin des Châteaux-Forts. Then head uphill to Ochsenstein Castle.

(8) Continue northwards along the path marked with the Blue Rectangle and Blue Ring symbols; you’ll soon come across a rock shaped like a ship’s prow – this is the southern tip of the Schlossberg.

(9) Pass the rocky outcrop and continue due north to reach the Col du Krappenfels.

(10) Begin the climb up to the Krappenfels Rock. At the foot of the rock, the path passes to its left and leads to the summit.

(11) Follow the path northwards again, then begin a long, winding descent. You will then reach a crossroads of paths at a footbridge.

(12) Cross the footbridge, then continue left along the path marked with the Blue Rectangle to return to the Maisonnette de Pierres car park (S/E).

There are no water points along the route, unless you ring the bell at the foresters’ cottages to ask for some.

Worth a visit

(8) At Ochsenstein Castle, do take the time to visit it. The staircase leading up to it is in good condition and the view from the summit is superb, particularly of Dabo Rock to the south. There is a second rock featuring ruins a little further along the path, also accessible via a ladder in good condition.
See the Ochsenstein Castle website
(11) From the summit of the Krappenfels, admire the view to the south. As from the Ochsenstein, you can make out the Rocher de Dabo to the south.

Hello,
I see that you have rated the "Reliability of the description" criterion as "average". What did you find lacking and think could be improved?
Also, if you walked 18 km, that means you walked further than the suggested route, as the distance is calculated automatically by Visorando.

Overall, the route was quite good and fairly well signposted. For our liking, there were too many straight paths through the forest, as we prefer routes with some elevation changes. That said, it must be a pleasant walk in the heat.

A lovely walk in this mountain range that we’ve often visited.
We spiced up the route by doing a round trip to the Brotsch Tower from the Schaefferplatz forest lodge.
In the end, we clocked up 16 km and had a lovely day without coming across many people...

The route is lovely, and the medieval Ochsenstein Castle and the sandstone cliffs of the Schlossberg and Krappenfels in particular offer a magical, unforgettable view.
Make sure you follow the signposts carefully from the Druids’ Table...
