Spessart Trail “Quellwinkel Kinzig”

Around the source of the Kinzig, walkers will find a slice of the Rhön within the Spessart: ridges offering unobstructed views contrast with the densely wooded hills typical of the Spessart. They allow you to see for miles – all the way to the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön. The abundance of panoramic views is what makes this 13.6 km-long Spessart trail around the basin formed by the Kinzig and its first tributaries so special.

Description of the walk

The Spessart trail ‘Quellwinkel Kinzig’ runs through the so-called Bergwinkel, featuring peaceful woodland paths and open field tracks, and circles the basin formed by the Kinzig and its first tributaries.

The walk begins on soft grassy paths on the slope of the ‘Firstäcker’, offering beautiful views into the distance. Scenic sections with ponds and wayside crucifixes invite you to linger. Passing the Wolfswäldchen, the path leads towards the Weiperzberg Nature Reserve. There, shell limestone hilltops with nutrient-poor grasslands and wooded upper slopes characterise the landscape. The area is a habitat for rare animal and plant species, including remarkable orchids; the common noctule bat only makes itself visible at dusk. At the foot of the Weiperzberg there is a well-equipped rest area.

Along the ridge path south-east of Weiperz, weathered boundary stones line the route. South of Sterbfritz lies the source of the Kinzig. From there, the route follows the course of Kinzigstraße as it leads away from the village once more. East of Sterbfritz, a ridge walk offering splendid views runs between the treeless hills known as ‘Roter Baum’ and ‘Sterbfritzer Höhe’. The view opens out to the east across the Sinn Valley.

The path then passes the Stephanskuppe nature reserve, which is known for its dry and semi-dry grasslands rich in orchids, growing on shell limestone. North of the Stephanskuppe, the view stretches as far as the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön. Finally, the last section offers a view into the Ramholztal valley.
