Description of the walk

Park in the spaces on Avenue des Pébrons.

(S/E) Head to the end of the avenue, go through the barrier and follow the track.

(1) Take the green trail no. 1 on the right until you reach the foot of the Rocher de Saint-Michel rock face.

(2) Take the dotted yellow trail no. 2a on the right, cross the Pas de la Demi-Lune, an exposed but easy rocky ledge that leads to a gap.

(3) Cross the breach and then turn left onto the dotted green trail no. 2a. At the end of the trail, take the yellow trail no. 2 on the left, which leads to the bottom of the Vallon de la Mounine.

(4) Turn left to climb up this valley on a path that is no longer marked (a few old green markings) but is still well maintained and clearly marked. You will need to cross two barriers: the lower Pas de la Mounine, equipped with carved steps, good handholds, an antique iron handrail and a more recent chain (plus stainless steel pins to secure or install a handrail); and the upper Pas, which is lower but not equipped. This will take you to the red trail no. 1.

(5) Take the path on the right, reach the ridge by going around the ruins of an old watchtower on the right, then turn left onto the Blue trail no. 1 and reach the nearby Sommet de Marseilleveyre, marked by a cross. Enjoy the magnificent 360° panorama.

(6) Continue on the Blue trail to reach the Col des Chèvres: there are two bars to descend, one of which is just before the pass.

(7) Descend to the left into the valley via the Green trail no. 1.

(8) Cross the Pas du Pin, a wide sloping crack followed by a good ledge. Continue downhill on the green trail, now joined by the red trail no. 1. Follow the red trail when the green trail veers off to the left.

(9) Continue through the valley via the Yellow trail no. 3. You will need to descend several ledges, the last of which is the highest with a few steeper metres that can be crossed in two stages. On the left (as you descend), the passage is more impressive but has very good handholds: an extremely solid juniper tree, an excellent crack and carved steps. It looks easier on the right, but the cemented steps ("Escalier des Géants") are quite far apart. Finish by taking a good path at the bottom of the valley and return to the fork at the start.

(1) Continue straight ahead to return to the car park (S/E).
