The hike starts in Callelongue. How to get there? Head for the Pointe Rouge district in Marseille, then Les Goudes. Continue along the road until you reach the Calanque de Callelongue, where you will find an old fishing port. Park your vehicle.
(S/E) Go to the end of the street that crosses the village.
(1) Turn left onto theGR® trail and follow it for a few metres after passing the DFCI barrier. At the first crossroads, take the path on the right. Climb steeply towards the Saint-Michel rock face opposite and below the Rocher des Goudes, following the green markings. The path passes under this rock face. Enjoy the view of the Frioul Islands, Port des Goudes and Calanque de Callelongue. You will reach the foot of the first cave, known as the Hermit's Cave.
(2) Reach it after a bit of climbing. A rope will help. Be careful, the rock is slippery. From here, the view is splendid. Enjoy these magical surroundings. Descend from the cave and follow the green markings, taking care at the first tricky section. Continue for a few metres, leaving the path to reach the second cave on your right, the Saint-Michel d'Eau Douce cave.
(3) Take the path to reach a third cave called Grotte de l'Ours. Pass between several columns to discover a large hall. Descend to find the green trail markers. Continue north and you will reach another trail junction.
(4) Turn left, following the green markings, and pass through the Pas du Pin.
Caution: the passage over a ledge requires some climbing and is dangerous. Please exercise extreme caution.
Follow this path to the Col des Chèvres and enjoy the 360° panorama.
(5) Take the path on the right, leaving the green markings, and follow the blue markings. Walk along the ridge on the north side, overlooking Marseille, to reach the summit of Marseilleveyre, where you will find a cross (432 m) and some ruins. Here too, there is a 360° panoramic view.
(6) Take the path again, following the blue markings. Descend north towards Marseille. The descent is steep along the rock face and passes through a small chimney. You will reach a new crossroads.
(7) Stay on the blue trail, turn right and rejoin the ridge. Some sections require the use of your hands. Reach the Col de la Selle. Continue along the blue trail to reach a fairly steep section where you will need to use your hands. You will then come to another intersection.
(8) Continue to the right, still following the blue markings. Walk across the Homme Mort plateau. This part of the trail requires caution due to the presence of sharp limestone pavement (small crevices in the rock caused by water runoff). You will reach a large crossroads marked by numerous cairns. Take another look at the view over the calanques: the Grande Candelle, Cap Canaille, the Cirque des Walkyries and, in the distance, the calanques of Sormiou and Morgiou.
(9) Take the path that branches off to the right at a 90° angle, leaving the blue markings to follow the green markings. Begin the descent on a stony path through a magnificent valley with a narrow passage. You will see a rock with a hole in it on your right, and numerous rocky needles. The gorge then narrows to reach the Plan des Cailles, an old wood that was destroyed by fire. Stay on the green markings throughout the descent. You will reach the Calanque de Marseilleveyre and rejoin theGR® 51 and 98 trails.
(10) Take it on the right to return to Callelongue. At the Calanque de la Mounine, follow theGR® until you reach a path on the right.
(11) Leave theGR® and take this path that climbs towards the old semaphore, marked in black. At the top, enjoy the beautiful view. Descend towards Callelongue and return to the crossroads at the start of the loop.
(1) Retrace your steps to the car park (S/E).
