The three caves of Marseilleveyre via the Pas du Pin and the Col des Chèvres

A splendid hike in the Marseilleveyre massif. The route takes you through the Ermite, St Michel d'Eau Douce and Ours caves, with their various chambers, some of which can be visited, so don't forget your torches.
The views are breathtaking and among the most beautiful in the Calanques park.
Please note: people who are prone to vertigo should be aware that there are some impressive aerial passages.
You are in the Calanques National Park, which is subject to specific regulations. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in a fine of up to €1,500.

Description of the walk

The hike starts in Callelongue. How to get there? Head for the Pointe Rouge district in Marseille, then Les Goudes. Continue along the road until you reach the Calanque de Callelongue, where you will find an old fishing port. Park your vehicle.

(S/E) Go to the end of the street that crosses the village.

(1) Turn left onto theGR® trail and follow it for a few metres after passing the DFCI barrier. At the first crossroads, take the path on the right. Climb steeply towards the Saint-Michel rock face opposite and below the Rocher des Goudes, following the green markings. The path passes under this rock face. Enjoy the view of the Frioul Islands, Port des Goudes and Calanque de Callelongue. You will reach the foot of the first cave, known as the Hermit's Cave.

(2) Reach it after a bit of climbing. A rope will help. Be careful, the rock is slippery. From here, the view is splendid. Enjoy these magical surroundings. Descend from the cave and follow the green markings, taking care at the first tricky section. Continue for a few metres, leaving the path to reach the second cave on your right, the Saint-Michel d'Eau Douce cave.

(3) Take the path to reach a third cave called Grotte de l'Ours. Pass between several columns to discover a large hall. Descend to find the green trail markers. Continue north and you will reach another trail junction.

(4) Turn left, following the green markings, and pass through the Pas du Pin.
Caution: the passage over a ledge requires some climbing and is dangerous. Please exercise extreme caution.
Follow this path to the Col des Chèvres and enjoy the 360° panorama.

(5) Take the path on the right, leaving the green markings, and follow the blue markings. Walk along the ridge on the north side, overlooking Marseille, to reach the summit of Marseilleveyre, where you will find a cross (432 m) and some ruins. Here too, there is a 360° panoramic view.

(6) Take the path again, following the blue markings. Descend north towards Marseille. The descent is steep along the rock face and passes through a small chimney. You will reach a new crossroads.

(7) Stay on the blue trail, turn right and rejoin the ridge. Some sections require the use of your hands. Reach the Col de la Selle. Continue along the blue trail to reach a fairly steep section where you will need to use your hands. You will then come to another intersection.

(8) Continue to the right, still following the blue markings. Walk across the Homme Mort plateau. This part of the trail requires caution due to the presence of sharp limestone pavement (small crevices in the rock caused by water runoff). You will reach a large crossroads marked by numerous cairns. Take another look at the view over the calanques: the Grande Candelle, Cap Canaille, the Cirque des Walkyries and, in the distance, the calanques of Sormiou and Morgiou.

(9) Take the path that branches off to the right at a 90° angle, leaving the blue markings to follow the green markings. Begin the descent on a stony path through a magnificent valley with a narrow passage. You will see a rock with a hole in it on your right, and numerous rocky needles. The gorge then narrows to reach the Plan des Cailles, an old wood that was destroyed by fire. Stay on the green markings throughout the descent. You will reach the Calanque de Marseilleveyre and rejoin theGR® 51 and 98 trails.

(10) Take it on the right to return to Callelongue. At the Calanque de la Mounine, follow theGR® until you reach a path on the right.

(11) Leave theGR® and take this path that climbs towards the old semaphore, marked in black. At the top, enjoy the beautiful view. Descend towards Callelongue and return to the crossroads at the start of the loop.

(1) Retrace your steps to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

Do not do this hike in rainy or windy weather. Some sections are vertiginous.

If you decide to visit the caves, do not venture in alone and make sure you have reliable lighting. I visited the first rooms with my wife, taking care, but the curiosity was worth it.
The scenery is magnificent. These caves were inhabited in prehistoric times.
Do not attempt this hike with young children, as the Pas du Pin is difficult and can be daunting when crossing the ledge a few metres above the ground.

There are no water sources.
It is advisable to wear good hiking boots. As with most trails in the calanques, there are scree, climbing and slippery rocks.

Bring binoculars.

In the nearby area

(3) Saint Michel Cave: You will discover a first chamber with a large "column" (stalactite and stalagmite that meet) at the back. If you have remembered to bring a torch, you can access several chambers. Please note that some are blocked by a chain. If you decide to go there, the rock is very slippery and very wet.
(6) Marseilleveyre summit:
- north side: view of Marseille, the Etoile massif, the Garlaban, Pic du Taoumé, Sainte Victoire, Sainte Baume, Pic de Bertagne, Mont Carpiagne... If the weather is clear, you can see the Alps.
- south: the Calanques park: Cap Canaille, Les Candelles, Mont Puget.

A very beautiful hike, with a few tricky sections where you need to use your hands. The description is accurate, but be careful not to take the wrong turn after the Col des Chèvres. Very well marked. I couldn't find the last cave!

Superb circuit, completed by two adults on a sunny Sunday with relatively light winds.
The relatively low number of visitors is a big advantage on a day like this.
The "climbing" sections are quite manageable for anyone in good physical shape.
The description assumes that you arrive by car at the already crowded car park, but there is a bus route that goes even closer to the start and you can also come by bike.
In the caves, a head torch is essential, and a light helmet can be a bonus.
Be careful, the first cave is visible in the distance but then disappears from view from the path taken in this direction. We missed it and had to turn back from the second cave to get there. The description could emphasise this point. As a landmark when you reach a "mini cave" (just a narrow passageway leading into the cliff), you need to go up a few steps earlier.
Bring your swimming gear for a dip in the quiet little cove of Marseilleveyre
Then don't forget to climb up to the semaphore before heading back down to Callelongue

A very beautiful hike, it deserves its difficult rating, as it is quite physically demanding.

A very beautiful hike offering magnificent views of the calanques, the sea and Marseille. As I was alone, I didn't venture into the caves beyond the first chamber, where chains and a danger sign prohibited further entry. I also avoided the Pas du Pin cliff by continuing straight ahead on the red trail (I think) until I reached a fork where I took a small trail on the left that rejoined the blue trail between points 5 and 6. Completed on 13 May 2024, with a GPS and following fairly clear directions, the route has some difficult sections where you really need to be very careful. It took me 5 hours and 40 minutes, not including a picnic break and a swim at Marseilleveyre beach, but the route is very photogenic. Thank you for this beautiful route.

You won't be disappointed when you visit the Calanques.
A beautiful hike that's a bit challenging.
We didn't find the bear cave, which is apparently very close to St Michel d'Eau, but that didn't stop us from enjoying this superb route.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views
We also visited the three caves.
It took us 4 hours and 50 minutes, but we stopped often to take photos.
Some parts are quite difficult and should not be attempted when it rains as the rocks are very slippery.
Not suitable for young children.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views
We also visited two caves, three of which are accessible on foot or with a bit of climbing!
It took us 3½ hours instead of the time indicated, but we are experienced hikers and walk quickly (uphill and downhill).

BEWARE, however, we had a very nasty surprise when we returned to the car park in Callelongue: we were victims of mouse jacking: all our belongings were stolen from the boot of our vehicle without any signs of forced entry.
The thieves have devices to hack the magnetic keys of recent vehicles...
Do not leave anything in your car! We lost all our documents and over £10,000 worth of luggage with no possibility of being reimbursed by any insurance company

I agree with the general opinion: it's wonderful! It's spectacular... in every sense of the word 😂 Very sporty, and longer than advertised, but we don't regret it at all. Diverse landscapes, vegetation, caves, wildlife, the sea... we loved every minute of it 😁

The hike is magnificent!
The profile is very accessible and the views are magnificent.
The GPX route and description are excellent!
We plan to do it again, probably in the other direction, which looks just as good!

A magnificent, very technical hike where we had to use our hands in many places. The estimated time of 4 hours and 40 minutes should be taken with caution, as it took us
the first 3 km in almost 2 hours because we took the time to take photos, visit the caves and take lots of breaks, surprised by the difficulty. (I was expecting it to be difficult, but not this difficult. Other hikes rated "difficult" are not as difficult).

We therefore decided not to do the entire hike, descending to the Col de la Selle to arrive via the Vallon de la Mounine, which shortened the hike by 3 km and also took 4 hours and 40 minutes.

I was enchanted by the beauty of the place and we will definitely return, this time with a little more training.

Beautiful hike starting from Callelongue. Visit to three interesting caves. After point 9, when you reach "Malvallon Sud", don't miss the "Titou et Ninou" balcony, which is ideal for a picnic with breathtaking views.
