Description of the walk

Start at the Champs de Mars car park in Briançon.

(S/E) Take Chemin des Salettes at the intersection with the N94 (a very small street that climbs between the restaurants "La vigne" and "Mamma Mia") opposite the car park. Arrive at Chemin des Fontaines (car parking available).

(1) Turn right onto the track leading to the old Fort des Salettes. Before the first bend, take the well-marked path on the right to leave the track.

(2) Without entering the fort, take the path that climbs to the left (follow the signs for Croix de Toulouse). This is a pleasant climb. Reach the summit of Croix de Toulouse. Enjoy the view of Briançon and join the track that climbs northwards.

(3) Follow this track. At the end of the track, without going as far as the small antenna relay station, take theGR®5Ctrail on the left and follow it until you reach a small abandoned house/sheepfold. From here, you can see the Écrins glaciers. Continue to the Enrouye blockhouse.

(4) Continue on the path that passes to the right of the building to go directly to the Serre des Aigles via a climb that becomes steeper on more rugged terrain.

(5) Once you reach the ridge, take your time, be quiet, and the eagles will come to meet you.
To return, take the same path to the crossroads of the trail and the track just before the Croix de Toulouse.

(3) Leave the path that leads to the Croix de Toulouse, which you took to get there, and continue along the track on the right for about 60 metres. Turn left onto a small path that leads into the forest and continue to the crossroads at an altitude of 1846 metres.

(6) Take a small path on the left (there is a sign) and follow the signs for "Briançon par le bois de la Pinée". The path is quite steep on the way down. You will arrive at the Chemin des Fontaines track.

(7) Take it on the left to return to the Chemin des Salettes crossroads.

(1) Turn right onto the path to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The walking time calculated by the app (6 hours 40 minutes) is a little overestimated. It can easily be done in 5 hours with a break at the summit.

Superb walk. Very beautiful views of Briançon, the Serre-Che valley, and Montgenèvre. The "high mountain" atmosphere you find when you reach the top is striking. I didn't reach the end of the route, preferring to turn back a few hundred metres before, somewhat impressed. The return trip through the woods is very "fun" (hike done in trail mode, in 3 hours), and the route is easy to follow.

A pleasant climb through the forest. A beautiful view of Briançon.
Unfortunately, the descent is very tricky, especially with fallen trees blocking the steep path. It is better to choose another route for the return journey.

Very beautiful hike with some steep sections; be careful on the last part to reach the ridge (loose rocks and small stones).

A beautiful approach to the summit. The slope is quite steep up to the summit, so don't be afraid to cut across the fields.
The view is superb! The weather was perfect.
We saw five or six eagles at the summit and a few marmots on the way down.

A hike offering magnificent panoramic views of Briançon and the three forts, gradually gaining height as you climb, and then over the adjacent valleys when you reach the ridge. There are also some interesting ancient fortifications to see along the way.
Despite a few slightly technical sections along the ridge, it is not particularly difficult and you can make fairly quick progress. Those who wish to prolong the pleasure can continue along the ridge after the peak, or even descend via the end of the valley (allow a few extra hours)!

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views of Briançon, the Guisane Valley, and the Écrins in the distance.
You can actually see eagles, even during the climb.
A wide variety of landscapes: from tree-lined mountain paths to forest, then desert, then pure rock.
The only downside is the technical difficulty at the end: personally, I didn't go all the way and stopped when it became too difficult in the rocky terrain.
Note that at the farm there is a passage inside (on the left on the way there and on the right on the way back, more visible because there is a path leading to it).
Furthermore, I strongly advise against returning via the forest track, which is the most challenging route I have ever taken: very steep, extremely narrow, difficult to see and sometimes disappearing between the trees, loose stones... This is also the opinion of a local couple: at a pinch, do it on the way up, and without regret, as its interest is rather limited compared to the rest of the hike.
Hike completed in good weather in September 2017.
