Description of the walk

From the Cité Vauban, heading towards Montgenèvre, after the post office roundabout, take the first left onto Chemin des Salettes. Park in the small lay-by at the hairpin bend to the left.

(S/E) Head west along Chemin des Fontaines and continue straight on, following the contour line almost exactly, until you reach the road.

(1) Take the road leading down towards the Chant’Ours Medical Centre. Do not go all the way down to the medical centre.

(2) Just above the medical centre, take the path on the right signposted ‘No motorised vehicles’.

(3) Cross the stream via the wooden footbridge. Continue along the path opposite and up the slope, then take the path on the left for about 200 m.

(4) At the fork, turn right towards “La Pierre aux Œufs”. The path is steep until you reach the megalithic site. ‘Snowshoe’ signs also mark the path, which is signposted in yellow. You’ll arrive at La Pierre aux Œufs. There’s an information board explaining the stone’s origin. The stone is ‘surprising’ given the site’s name. Continue on to the Chemin du Bois des Rousses.

(5) Turn left and continue to La Villette.

(6) Turn left onto Chemin de Saint-Arnould and head for the chapel of the same name.

(7) Just past the chapel, keep to the left to continue along the path and rejoin the route you have already taken.

(4) Follow the path back in the opposite direction to return to the car park above the Cité Vauban (S/E).

A hike that does not present any major technical difficulties.

Worth a visit

The Pierre aux Œufs megalithic site.
In the Bois des Rousses, there are lots of ‘white’ mushrooms (I don’t know their name).
Saint-Arnould Chapel.
View of the Vauban citadel and the town of Briançon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A lovely walk. The route is easy to follow. The ‘Pierre aux œufs’ is a bit of a let-down.

A lovely, not-too-difficult walk.
There’s a picnic table in the shade behind Saint Arnould’s Chapel, which is ideal on hot days.
The only downside is that the road leading to the car park is one-way (except for residents) and there are very few spaces...

A brilliant walk – not difficult at all.
It took just a little effort to climb up to the Pierre aux Oeufs, but nothing too strenuous!
For botany enthusiasts on the way there (and back), there’s an arboretum where you can discover the different species
A very interesting history of the origins of the Pierre aux Oeufs (on site)
Above St Chaffrey, towards St Arnoult’s Chapel, there are some superb houses – complete with the luxury cars to match! But that’s for when we’re rich!!
