Serre de Malamort

The Serre de Malamort ridge is a remarkable balcony offering superb views, particularly of Dévoluy, Les Écrins and the Durance valley. The route often passes through woodland, so you can enjoy the beautiful colours of autumn.

Description of the walk

Head to Urtis between Venterol and Curbans in the Alpes de Haute-Provence south of Tallard. There is a car park with a drinking fountain between the hamlets of Urtis and Les Garcins.

(S/E) Head to Les Garcins and take theGR® 653D, which branches off to the right towards the south-west. Turn left at the first intersection and you will come to a fork.

(1) Continue left on theGR® and follow it to a place called "Clastre" (elevation 1320).

(2) Leave theGR® and turn right onto the wide path now marked in yellow. After a few dozen metres, take the path on the left, heading south, which climbs up to the Serre de Malamort. Reach the ridge where the view is splendid. Climb south-west to the summit. Be careful, some short sections on this ridge are relatively exposed and can be daunting.

(3) Descend on the other side, still heading southwest. Some small sections are very steep.

(4) After this initial descent, turn right at the hairpin bend to walk under Serre de Malamort, continuing to follow the yellow markings. After walking between the undergrowth and the edge of the pasture (some of the yellow markings have been erased but the path is generally quite visible), you will come to a wider path.

(5) Follow this path, which will take you back to theGR® trail you took on the way up.

(1) Retrace your steps back to the Urtis car park (S/E).

A very beautiful short hike offering a stunning view of the Durance valley.
Some sections along the ridge are a little daunting but enjoyable.
The access road is also very pleasant.
The duration is slightly overestimated.

A very beautiful hike with my dog.
After several days of rain, the weather was partly sunny, the route was perfectly passable, and the markings left by other hikers helped me find my way when the trail disappeared.
The route was as described, and even for someone like me who is really afraid of heights, the ridge crossing was perfectly manageable.
Beautiful scenery and a pleasant route.
I will definitely do it again with my children.

A beautiful hike that takes us to the crest of Serre de Malamort, where the view of Pic de Bure, the Durance valley and Les Ecrins is magnificent. Most of the ascent and descent is through woodland, which is welcome in hot weather. Just a small clarification: the car park is located between Vierre and Les Garcins, not between Urtis and Les Garcins. Thank you for this lovely hike.

A very pleasant hike, fairly easy except for the section along the ridge, which may be challenging for those prone to vertigo: at this point, the trail is not well marked, the ridge is narrow, and it is essential to watch your step. However, it is well worth the effort, as the view is magnificent on a clear day.
It should also be noted that access to the car park by car is via a narrow, fairly rough road with tight hairpin bends.
In short, this is a very nice hike, but not recommended for people who are not used to the mountains.

Please note: Before point 4: Signpost (new) on the right > Urtis – Les Garcins
Follow it, leaving the GPS track, as our path disappears 200 metres further on.
You will find it again after approx. 600 m of descent through the woods.
The trail is poorly marked and signposting is random, but the GPS track is perfect.

The narrow ridge crossing is very safe, but caution is advised in strong winds.
The ravines on either side are impressive (not for those who suffer from vertigo!)
Full sunshine and autumn colours: splendid!
