Chalamont Ancient Trail

The start of this walk is at the chapel situated beside the road between Boujailles and Villers-sous-Chalamont.
Along the way, look out for the wheel ruts carved into the rock. They bear witness to the heavy traffic of vehicles and horse-drawn carts that once passed this way, remnants of the salt road that ran through here.

(S/E) Follow the D49 along the small grassy path on the left, heading north. Take the first gravel track on the left. Ignore a path on the right (the return route)

(1). At the fork in the road, take the gravel track that climbs to the right. If you’re observant, you’ll spot a pretty wayside shrine as you climb, on your right. Continue along this track, which soon begins to descend.

(2) Further down the slope, you’ll find a small path leading uphill on your right. This will take you to the ancient Chalamont pass. Once you reach the pass, cross the old tollgate and continue along this path, which descends back towards the forest track you took at the start of the route. Back on the gravel road, keep left, following the same route as on the way out, until you reach the chapel (S/E).
