Departure: from Levier, towards Boujailles - Champagnole. Park on the right in the valley at the top of the Mont hill (3 km from Levier) at the junction with Chemin de Maublin. Space for 2 or 3 cars at the side of the road.
(S/E) Take this path, which will join the D49 linking Villers to Boujailles after about 5 km of pleasant walking with, on the right, a view of Mont Poupet and the easily recognisable Crêt de Montmahoux.
Reach the first intersection after about 1 km.
(1) Take the path on the right, which descends slightly, and follow it for another 3.5 km until you reach a second intersection, where you will stay on the tarmac path (left path) that leads to the D49.
(2) Follow the D49 for about 500 m, climbing to the left and passing in front of the memorial to an FFI resistance fighter who was killed at this spot. You will reach a fork in the road.
(3) Take the path on the right marked "voie antique" (ancient road). At the car park, follow the signs up this ancient road to the Chalamont passage. Stop at this passage, the remains of a toll on one of the salt roads between Salins and neighbouring Switzerland, and a castle (wall sections), and read the detailed comments. You are now roughly halfway (6 km).
(4) Cross the passage, then below, ignore the sign on the right and turn left to join the D49 about 200 m away. Turn left and walk a few metres.
(5) Option: return trip via the busy D49 road to the chapel located about 200 m away.
Cross the D49 carefully and follow a well-maintained path almost opposite, which runs for nearly 2 km alongside a beautiful pine forest and pastures on the right. Take the time to admire the landscape on the right: views of Mont d'Or, Grand Taureau, the village of Boujailles and its imposing church with twin bell towers, and, with a bit of luck, Mont Blanc. You may also be lucky enough to encounter deer and roe deer. You will come to a right-angle bend to the right.
(6) Leave the path and enter the pasture, continuing along the edge of the forest. After about 200 metres, you will reach a path that descends to the right at a right angle. At the bottom of this path (about 200 metres), you will arrive at Chemin du Dan.
(7) Follow it to the left at a right angle, passing in front of a small oratory. Follow this path through the forest for about 2 km. At the crossroads, continue along the path that climbs slightly to the left and takes you to the top of the Maublin forest (view of Levier) before descending and rejoining the path you took on the way there.
(1) Continue on the right to the starting point (S/E).
