Description of the walk

Park in the square in front of Tusey Castle.

(S/E) With your back to the castle, head left, then turn left again, following the Flèche Verte signpost no. 5.

(1) Before reaching the D964, turn right, following signpost no. 5: there are two picnic tables on the verge on the left near the road.

(2) Turn left downhill.

(3) At the T-junction, turn right to reach Gombervaux Castle.

(4) Take a short detour to see the castle’s inner courtyard without entering the adjoining farm, which is private property: there are stone benches in the castle courtyard, and you can also see the portcullis. Turn back.

(4) Return to the signposted path on the left.

(5) Carry on straight ahead; the path is muddy in places.

(6) Head down to the left.

(7) Turn right and carry on straight ahead to the village of Ugny-sur-Meuse. Walk past the cemetery, where there are graves of Royal Air Force soldiers, and reach the nearby road junction.

(8) Turn right and head straight up, ignoring the paths on either side.

(9) Turn left and head straight down the main path to the starting point in front of Tusey Castle (S/E).

Picnic tables at point (1).

(4) You can visit the inner courtyard of Gombervaux Castle: there are stone benches for picnicking, and interesting information about the association restoring this feudal castle.

At point (6), you can shorten the route by half by turning right towards point (9).

Please note: the route can be quite muddy in places after several days of rain.
Remember to bring a hat in summer, as this route offers no shade at all!

Worth a visit

Our view of the castle as we arrived was rather obscured by the tall cereal crops growing on the plateaus.
We changed our plans from the 6th to the 9th because the ground was very muddy, and made up for it with a visit to Vaucouleurs

A lovely, easy route – the only downside is that the numbers should be marked on the signs, as we wanted to take route 6 but it wasn’t signposted, so we just went on instinct. The castle is well worth a visit and has been beautifully restored by the volunteers.

A lovely walk to enjoy in spring – in fact, none of the route takes you through the forest. You’ll discover the pretty, rolling countryside of the Meuse, which is well worth a visit. Gombervaux Castle is a remarkable sight and is currently being restored by volunteers. Some parts can only be visited with a guide for a fee of €5, by booking in advance on the following number: 06 51 58 14 45.
