From the canal to the wind turbines via fountains and wash houses from Mauvages

A lovely walk that will allow you to discover Mauvages, its fountains and its extraordinary wash houses. It also includes a short stroll through the forest to listen to the murmur of the wind turbines

Please note: do not walk this route in the opposite direction, as it is forbidden to go down the steps by the canal, between (3) and (4)

Description of the walk

Car park in the centre of the village, near Saint-Pantaléon Church and Mauvages Town Hall.

(S/E) Leave the car park heading towards the church and turn right uphill towards the first wash house. Walk around it, both inside and outside.

(1) Continue along Rue Haute (D10) to the right. At the fountain, turn left to head back down below the church. At the end of the street, by the R. Mathis School, turn right onto Rue Rouillar.

(2) At the three-way junction, by a beautiful wash house, turn right, then at the fountain turn right again onto Rue de la Crouée (D 168), towards Void. Stay on this road until you reach the pretty chapel, opposite an information board. Continue down this road until you reach the canal.

(3) Head down towards the canal and follow the towpath until you reach a tunnel. Climb the first flight of steps on the right carefully as they can be slippery; once at the top, turn left to reach and climb the second flight of steps (you must not go down either of these flights of steps).

(4) At the top of these steps, turn left and join the gravel track, then follow it to the right. Pass a path on your left and head down towards a road junction. Cross this junction straight ahead, turn left, and keep the roads on your right.

(5) Walk past the wash house and head up towards the forest along a wide stony path, which is a variant ofthe GR® 703. At a three-way junction in the path, head right and climb towards the forest. You’ll reach a large crossroads; at the information board about wind turbines, turn right and continue straight on until you reach a T-junction (elevation 395).

(6) Turn right to head down a dirt track. Walk past a forest shelter and continue straight on towards the village.

(7) Enter the village and walk through it, following Rue Basse and its pretty fountains.

(8) Just before the junction with the D 168, opposite a fountain, take the small road on the right which leads to the church square (S/E).

We really enjoyed this lovely, easy walk. Mauvages: its wash houses and fountains, and a ray of sunshine.
