Dala Springs Trail and return via Weidstubli

Climbing up the Dala Gorge, you will discover a bubbling river, learn about the thermal springs, walk overlooking the gorge and climb metal stairs near a waterfall. The return trip involves a slight climb, but this can be avoided.

Description of the walk

The trail starts at the Dorfplatz (village square), next to the Alpentherme thermal baths.

(S/E) Head north-west and pass the Maria Hilf church. At the end of the street, turn right and continue for about 60 metres.

(1) In the middle of the bend, take the signposted lane on the right. Follow this lane, which becomes a path, passing through greenery, parallel to the Dala river, and climbing gently. Go under a road bridge. Further on, join a wide path (Heilbadweg) and follow it straight ahead. Ignore a turn-off on the right and continue to a fork just before a footbridge over the river.

(2) Follow the path on the right (do not take the footbridge). Further on, the path gives way to a footbridge attached to the cliff. Climb up the Dala Gorge. Further on, cross the river, then climb the metal stairs. Follow the river on your right until you reach a three-way junction (signpost).

(3) Follow the right-hand branch, which crosses the river, towards Majingsee and Weidstubli. Pass a viewpoint overlooking the Dala flowing below. Continue along the path.

(4) At the intersection, take the path on the left, which quickly turns east-southeast and then climbs. At the top of the climb, the path splits in two: take the path on the right. You will come to a road, follow it to the right and begin the descent. Pass a restaurant with a large terrace, then ignore the path that leads to a building (Gaarschä).

(5) Follow a path that zigzags down to the right. You will see a wall going down the slope. Ignore the paths that branch off to the left. Cross the Ringstrasse, continue straight ahead and you will come to another street. Follow it to the right and you will quickly arrive at your starting point (S/E).

Notes

Leukerbad can be reached by bus.

If you are afraid of heights or suffer from vertigo, here is some information: the footbridge is very solid and wide and runs along and across the impressive Dala Gorge. It is attached to the rock face, so you are suspended above the void, but the steel construction is completely safe (see photos). Towards the end of the route, two staircases lead to the top of the gorge. There are several options for returning, including turning back halfway. The circuit opts for one of these options.

The path to the stairs is wheelchair accessible.

Along the footbridge, you will see several information panels. Scan the QR code to listen to a short explanatory text in French. Near the start of the footbridge, you will see a small pulley that can be used to raise a small container filled with thermal water from the spring. Dip your hand in to feel the temperature of the water.

The hike is generally accessible from April to November, except in adverse weather conditions.

The Weidstübli restaurant is located towards the end of the trail, before the point (5).

Worth a visit

In Leukerbad (Loèche-les-Bains): Several renowned thermal baths and fountains with water flowing at different temperatures. Beautiful old wooden houses, mostly located above the church.

An impressive rock cirque dominates the town.

Access to the Gemmipass (altitude 2,269 m) by cable car to admire the view of the high peaks: Matterhorn, etc.

Access to the Torrent area by cable car (or probably by bus).
